Why Defying Gravity was destined for oblivion

Today’s Guest Clack is from Izzy Plumbly, a writer from Manchester, England who has a full-blown addiction to TV and has never quite gotten over the mess that was Buffy season six. Or the last episode of Angel. But The Wire and Sons of Anarchy soon made up for those, as did Mad Men, Bones … the list goes on….
First things first, let’s get this straight. I loved Defying Gravity. Thirteen beautifully crafted episodes that paid off bit by bit, readying me for the big reveal — that I’m pretty sure would have been metered out morsel by tasty morsel over the series — Ron Livingston doing his “man with a difficult past” routine, Christina Cox’s awesome tough-girl act … I could go on.

How Defying Gravity would have progressed, straight from the creator

One of the things that kills me anytime a show I love doesn’t get picked up for additional seasons — or is flat-out canceled mid-season — is dangling storylines. Being that I’m into sci-fi shows, enduring long story arcs is pretty commonplace. So, when word came that Defying Gravity was not only not getting a second season, but it wouldn’t be airing the final handful of episodes in the U.S., it was par for the course. But dammit, I wanted to know what was going to happen next!
Defying Gravity – And now whatever way the story ends

Well, we’ve come a long way in thirteen episodes, haven’t we? Defying Gravity started off strong in my eyes, but for most it took some time before it finally hit its stride. Ironically, the episodes that remain unaired by ABC have probably been the strongest. Viewers who have tracked them down all seem to stand by the idea that the series certainly left too much potential on the table to have been cancelled (sure, I know the ratings were rough — I’m not disputing that).
Once again, before you dare “clique” through to the rest of the article, know that MAJOR SPOILERS lie ahead.
Defying Gravity – Does it all really come down to this?

Things are quickly, and unfortunately, coming to an end for Defying Gravity. I’ve had an opportunity to watch Episode 12, and I’ve got to say that I really like where the series was going. Donner and Zoe have great chemistry, the mystery of the Beta (and the others) is very solid, and the cast has a great dynamic. This episode was obviously the first half of a two-hour finale, so for those that haven’t seen it, but are taking the time to track them down, I would suggest waiting until you can see Episodes 12 and 13 together. As per usual, SPOILER WARNINGS APPLY.
Defying Gravity – Sentenced to solitary confinement in their own skins

Today, I continue my look at the episodes of Defying Gravity that ABC decided we didn’t want to see. In the Alphabet Network’s defense, there really weren’t that many people watching. However, I know that there are a lot of fans of the show that frequent the site, so we continue with our coverage. Again ABC is stating that they plan to eventually air these final four episodes, so Major Spoiler Warnings apply to those that continue reading.
Defying Gravity – Its Deju Vu all over again

When ABC pulled Defying Gravity from its prime time schedule, all seven of its fans were in an uproar. OK, I kid, there were more than seven fans; truthfully, it was actually a pretty popular show around these parts. Since it has continued to air in Canada, we’ve decided to continue covering it through the end of the first (ha!) season. For those that have chosen to wait for domestic airing, be advised that a Big Honking Spoiler Warning is in effect. Seriously … turn back before Beta decides you’re not worthy.
Ratings Clack – Heeere’s Jay Leno

After a summer of wondering what the result of NBC just giving up on the 10 PM hour would be, we now have our first look at the numbers. Jay Leno started with a bang (over 18 million viewers), and then quickly started the slow grind to reality. The week also saw the premieres of One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Biggest Loser, The Beautiful Life, SNL: News, Parks & Rec, The Office, Community, Bones, and Fringe. Some of those were more successful than others. Read the rest of this entry »
