Ratings Clack – 2008-2009 goes out with a bang

Just like that, the 2008-2009 season is done. We are now firmly in the grips of the summer television season. That means there will be a months long wait (10 if you’re a Chuck fan!) for new episodes. On the bright side, you’ll have plenty of time to watch the Women’s College World Series (Danielle Lawrie is awesome!) or the French Open (I’ve got Nadal and Safina). Or maybe you’ll join me in reading World War Z (Zombies!). Before you get started on that fancy new summer schedule, we have one last week of numbers to take a look at.

FOX - It was the biggie, so let’s begin with Idol. There was a fair bit of chatter about how the numbers were down for the Idol finale, but let’s be realistic. The final performance show (23.82m/8.6), and the big finale announcement (28.84m/10), were so far ahead of everything else on TV that it doesn’t even matter. Consider that only two other shows, 2 ½ Men and Dancing With The Stars, were even able to crack 5 in the demo. Even in a ‘down’ year, Idol is far and away the number one show on television.

Elsewhere, the Sunday animation block got the week off to a slow start. Perhaps it was the presence of the Survivor and Housewives finales. Simpsons (5.85m/2.9), King Of The Hill (5.22m/2.6), Family Guy (7.35m/3.7), and American Dad (5.64m/2.8) were all down a bit. That theme continued on Monday. 24 (9.65m/3.1) missed having Dr. House at 8. Tuesday did bring some good news, in addition to Idol. Glee (9.62m/3.9) premiered to critical raves and managed to post what I would call very Fringe-like numbers. The kids from So You Think You Can Dance (8.47m/3.4) kicked off the FOX summer on Thursday, winning the night in the demo. And Friday, Don’t Forget The Lyrics (3.4m/1) made its return to Friday, with very Dollhouse looking numbers.

ABC - As with FOX, ABC’s final week was carried by their reality powerhouse. Dancing With The Stars remains a legitimate hit, posting excellent numbers for Monday’s performance show (19.17m/4.4), and the big Tuesday finale (20.31m/5.2). Tom and Samantha passed the Monday keys off to The Bachelorette (8.69m/3) which was below where The Bachelor left off. However, as we saw with that one, casting is everything.

Elsewhere, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (9.27m/3.1) and Desperate Housewives (13.96m/4.7) wrapped things up on Sunday. Those numbers are down year to year, and it is the lowest rated Housewives finale ever, but still solid. The only other programming of note was the two hour finale of Ugly Betty (6.27m/1.9).

CBS – Not to be outdone, CBS had a big reality finale of their own as Survivor wrapped up with the final episode (12.94m/4.2) and the reunion show (11.58m/4.1) on Sunday. The week continued with Rules of Engagement illustrating just what the power of a good lead-in will do: Rules Of Engagement (7.49m/2.7), How I Met Your Mother (8.73m/3.7), 2 ½ Men (16.18m/5.3), Rules Of Engagement (12.87m/4.4). Having watched both episodes, I can assure you, the second one wasn’t 5 million viewers better. CSI: Miami (14.19m/3.8) finished Monday with their finale. That demo number is an interesting one, as it is .4 better than the original CSI managed with its finale. Could it be that Horatio is now the top dog in the CSI universe?

Good news continued Tuesday as NCIS (16.51m/3.4) continues to hold up amazingly well against Idol. Likewise, The Mentalist (16.82m/3.7) was just fine up against DWTS. Without A Trace (11.21m/2.5) wasn’t quite as successful, and can now be added to the list of shows that entered Tuesday @ 10 and never made it back out. The short week wrapped up on Wednesday with uneventful finales from Old Christine (5.55m/1.6) and Gary Unmarried (5.52m/1.7), and another solid cliffhanger from Criminal Minds (13.99m/3.5).

NBC - It was what I would call a bizarro reversal week for the peacock. Next season there will be no scripted programming in the 10PM slot, as the network is going all Jay, all the time. Last week, the only new scripted programming was at 10PM. It wasn’t a good week. The highlight was Law & Order:SVU (6.92m/2.5) on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that highlight was the lowest rated SVU ever. The original L&O (6.66m/2) wasn’t any better on Wednesday. Medium (6.56m/1.9) made its final NBC appearance on Monday. Look for that viewer number to jump by a good two million when the show moves to Friday on CBS. Finally, Southland (6.45m/1.9) finished its inaugural season. Don’t look for those numbers to improve on the NBC Friday.

CW - It was a short week, with only four hours of new programming. Gossip Girl (2.33m/1.1) went out with a steady number. Their partner in crime, One Tree Hill (2.68m/1.3), saw a small bump, most likely aided by the announced casting changes. Tuesday, Reaper (1.71m/.7) suffered another small drop. And 90210 (2m/1.1) finished off the week.

Next week, everything changes. And by that I mean the weekly post. With so little new network programming, we’ll begin the shift to Ratings Clack Lite for the summer. We’ll still follow the new things on the networks, and start mixing in some cable results as things like Burn Notice, Psych, and Eureka get new seasons under way.

Big Love, Cutthroat Bitch, and Grumpy: Where do House fellows go?

Appearing on House can be good for your career, even if you’re just a fellow who got fired during Season 4. Actors don’t get cast on House because they’re lame. Even though obviously people like Dave Matthews have lucrative careers outside of House, what about other minor characters, especially those who have had recurring roles? What happens after House?

This weekend, I was watching House re-runs with some friends when one of them told me that Edi Gathegi (Big Love) also appeared in the movie Twilight. The conservative doc traded in his stethoscope for dreadlocks and a sexy torso to play semi-evil vampire Laurent. As Laurent, he is completely unrecognizable. I usually have a pretty good memory for work actors have done, but I thought my friend was wrong until I looked it up.

Anne Dudek, who played Amber (aka Cutthroat Bitch) has also continued working. She has appeared on both Mad Men as Francine Hanson and Big Love as Alby’s first wife, Laura. Of course, my first love is Amber, but I am always happy to see her working. I think Anne Dudek really deserves her own show.

Grumpy, (aka Brennan and actor Andy Comeau) the doc who got fired for faking a polio result in a patient and then curing it with orange juice, has also had further work. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago as a blind date on Trust Me. As soon as he showed up, I didn’t like him because he had faked the polio.

David Morse, the evil Detective Tritter, perhaps got the best gig of anyone who has appeared on House in a recurring role: He played George Washington on the HBO John Adams miniseries. Conversely, even though I hated his character on House, I loved him on John Adams. His Washington was stoic, admirable, and exactly right.

Sela Ward, who played House’s love interest Stacy in Season 2 has only made one appearance since House, though. She played Kevin Costner’s wife in The Guardian. She’s only been in one thing, and that was in 2006. What is up with that?

Current Series

Shannen Doherty will be returning to her former television zip code one more time. Doherty will be reprising her role as harlot Brenda Walsh for the season finale of 90210. What she will be back for, other than making Kelly’s life a bit more hellish, is unknown. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

The stars are coming out for an upcoming episode of NBC’s Medium directed by star Patricia Arquette. In addition to a return appearance by Angelica Huston, look for guest stints by Rumer Willis and Brothers & Sisters star Balthazar Getty. [Source: People]

New Series

Big news! Former O.C. actress Mischa Barton is NOT being added to the cast of the Melrose Place remake. However, she will be staying with the CW for the Ashton Kutcher produced A Beautiful Life. Don’t worry about this, though. Being a Kutcher produced show, it’ll probably be canceled in no time at all. [Source: The Envelope]

Over in the world of webisodes, theWB.com has cast Internet star Jessica “LonleyGirl15″ Rose for a new web horror series entitled Blood Cell. Rose will star as a woman racing against the clock to stop a psycho killer. [Source: Cynopsis]

After a couple of guest-starring stints and a recurring role on Chuck, former Arrested Development star Tony Hale is working to obtain a steady paycheck. He is set to star in the FOX comedy Cop House and will play an officer who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. A perfect casting for Hale, in my opinion. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Here come the neighbors! Joining the cast of the Melrose Place reboot is Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. The former star of the more innocent 7th Heaven will play Violet, a character whose disarming outer naivete masks a calculating sex vixen inside. [Source: Entertainment Weekly]

Get ready to feel old (like you don’t already). Former Full House sibling, and sister to Kirk Cameron, Candace Cameron Bure, is joining the cast of ABC Family’s Perfect 10. Following a group of Olympic hopeful gymnastic teenagers, Candace will star as a — ready for it — step-mom-to-be of one of the competitors. Get me my rocking chair, please! Last week we mentioned the casting of Scott Wolf to the remake of the ’80s sci-fi series V. This week the role of the villain was given to former Firefly Morena Baccarin. She will play Anna, the leader of the Visitors who is remarkably knowledgeable about human culture and media manipulation. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Pilots

Ashley Jensen, currently starring on Ugly Betty, is moonlighting on a CBS comedy pilot titled Accidentally on Purpose. She will play the best friend to show star Jenna Elfman. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Former Jericho star Skeet Ulrich is coming back to CBS in a drama pilot titled Back. He will play a man who was reported missing right after the events of 9/11. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Another Ugly Betty star, Rebecca Romijn, is moving on in her television career with a role on the ABC drama pilot Eastwick. Based on the movie and novel Witches of Eastwick, Romijn has been cast as the third witch. She will join already cast Lindsay Price and Jamie Ray Newman. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Now that Scrubs is finishing up its run, its cast members are out looking for other jobs. One of these is Donald (Turk) Faison. He’s joining Cedric the Entertainer in the ABC comedy pilot The Law, which focuses on the lives of a few LAPD reserve officers. [Source: seattlepi.com]

Sarah Michelle Gellar is finally getting some siblings for her HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladys. Joining the actress, who will be known as Buffy until she is laid in the ground, will be former Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and current United States of Tara star Nate Coddry and Deadwood actress Molly Parker. Coddry will play Gellar’s younger bookish brother while Parker will play her older therapist sister. [Source: Entertainment Weekly]

Casting Clack – Lily’s cast fills out, Dancing With the Stars loses two, and the fifth Cylon jumps over to CSI

This week, we have casting news for: Lily, Dancing With the Stars, CSI, ER, and many others.

Now that Battlestar Galactica has wrapped up production there isn’t much for the cast and creators to do other than roll in the money they’ve made from the series over the last few years. This means that there are plenty of opportunities for these folks to drop in on other television series. Case in point: Kate Vernon, otherwise known as BSG’s Ellen Tigh, will be joining Ronald D. Moore on an upcoming episode of CSI. The plot? A murder investigation at a science fiction convention. [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Get ready for a Seinfeld reunion featuring the entire cast of the hit comedy series! Unfortunately, unless you subscribe to HBO you may not get to see it. That’s because the whole cast will be appearing on the Larry David comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm for a multi-episode arc. So, either subscribe now or wait for the DVD release. The newest season of Dancing With the Stars hasn’t even aired yet and the cast is already looking like a badly beaten group of football players after a particularly rought pre-season. It was confirmed earlier this week that singer Jewel and Access Hollywood host Nancy O’Dell would not be competing due to leg injuries. Only one replacement has been named right now — Holly Madison from E!’s The Girls Next Door. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

I’m sure one of the many trivia questions that will be generated once ER ends in less than a month is, “Who was the last trauma victim in the emergency room?” It could turn out to be the Dead Zone’s Cara Buono, who will play a pregnant woman who goes into labor after a car accident. Well, I guess Eli Stone is really dead, isn’t it? Especially after I read that Victor Garber is joining the cast of FOX’s musical comedy Glee. Garber will play the father of the shows leading man. He will be joined in the cast by another outcast from ABC — Pushing Daisies Kristin Chenoweth. Both actors are also wonderful singers, which makes me feel that there is some hope for this series. Julianna Margulies is returning to the legal world once again. The former star of ER (who’ll be showing up on the series this week) will pick up her briefs one more time for the CBS pilot Good Wife. Time to say good-bye to a member of MTV’s “reality” series The Hills. Lauren Conrad will be leaving the show at the end of the fifth season, which premieres on March 30th. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

Jackie Earle Haley, who is currently in the box office smash Watchmen, is jumping from the big to the small screen with a job on FOX’s Human Target. Haley will be playing information gatherer for main character Christopher Chance (Mark Valley). Also joining the cast is Pushing Daisies alum Chi McBride, who will play Chance’s business partner. The cast for the new Gossip Girl spinoff, titled Lily, is filling out quite nicely. Advanced talks are in the works to bring on Cynthia Watros (Lost) and Andrew McCarthy as Lily’s parents. McCarthy would be an ironic casting since he is known for many ‘Brat Pack’ movies of the 1980s. Also joining will be former Veronica Mars star Ryan Hansen as one of Lily’s ’80s pals. Can you believe in Al Michaels? Thirty (yes, thirty!) years after he made the famous call during the 1980 Winter Olympics, and 22 years after his last Olympic broadcast assignment, Al will be returning to the booth to host the daytime coverage of NBC’s 2010 Olympics (a lot of ‘Olympic’ references here). Michaels will host over 50 hours of daytime and weekend coverage from Vancouver. [Source: The Futon Critic]

Let the casting begin for ABC’s remake of V. Scott Wolf has been signed as a regular cast member for the reinvention of the’ 80s science fiction series. He will portray Chad Decker, a cable news anchor who is asked to pass the propaganda around for the invading aliens. [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Fans of Twilight rejoice! Jackson Rathbone, who played vampire Jasper Hale in the movie, will guest star on a Criminal Minds episode set to be directed by Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander. Rathbone will play a student who may become the next target of a serial killer. [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Veronica Mars‘ Krysten Ritter will portray Carol Rhodes, Lily’s older sister, in the Gossip Girl spin-off. The spin-off’s pilot will air as a Gossip Girl episode on May 11. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Come the third season of Greek, actress Tiffany Dupont will no longer be a regular cast member due to creative reasons. Even if Dupont will not portray her character Frannie on a regular basis, the show would like to have her guest star in a few episodes. [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Actress Swoosie Kurtz’s schedule is busy! Along with the Desperate Housewives gig we mentioned earlier, the actress will appear on an episode of Heroes as one of Angela’s friends. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

Gabrielle Union, who played Wilhelmina’s sisters on Ugly Betty, landed guest star role on Life. The actress, who’ll appear in many episodes, will be a partner for Crews. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell are in talks to star in the NCIS spin-off. O’Donnell would play an agent who can easily change persona to do undercover work. As for singer LL Cool J, he would be playing an ex-Navy Seal. The NCIS spin-off is set to be launched later this spring in an episode of NCIS. Heard the rumor about the third Winchester brother on Supernatural? Turns out the sibling will be played by Threshold’s Jake Abel. The character, named Adam Milligan, will be introduced in the April 23 episode. Papa Winchester hid Adam’s existence from his other two sons. [Source: TV Guide]

Casting Clack – More people join Clooney on ER, Campbell gets lost in the ’80s, Graham comes back to comedy

This week, we have casting news for: ER, Martin Scorsese’s new HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm and others.

FOX is working quickly to cast its recently-ordered American version of Absolutely Fabulous. One of the first actors to possibly join the show is former 3rd Rock from the Sun cast member Kristen Johnston. If she is picked she will portray Edina, the character played by Jennifer Saunders in the original version. [Source: Zap2it]

Michael Shannon, Oscar nominee for his role in Revolutionary Road, will be co-starring in Martin Scorsese’s new HBO project Boardwalk Empire. Taking place during the Prohibition era, Shannon will play a Treasury Department agent tasked with controlling bootlegging. [Source: THR.com]

While Christian Slater’s primetime debut in My Own Worst Enemy was extremely short-lived, he’s not down on television yet. In fact, he’s going from the very serious drama right into absurd comedy with a guest starring role on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Last week we mentioned the return of George Clooney and Julianna Marguiles to the blood-stained hallways of ER. Now it turns out they will be joined by actress Susan Sarandon. Again, who she is playing and how she will be connected to Clooney’s Doug Ross (or Marguiles’ Carol Hathaway) is being kept a mystery. I just hope that all the anticipation that these three names are generating isn’t dashed by small parts with few lines. [Source: Watch with Kristin]

Good news for fans of Lauren Graham! The former star of Gilmore Girls is, hopefully, returning to television in a new comedy for ABC titled Let It Go. Graham will play a female Dr. Phil-like talk show host who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, isn’t able to let it all go. [Source: Variety]

Billy Campbell, he of the former science fiction series The 4400, is traveling back in time to the 1980s for the new NBC drama Lost in the ’80s. Campbell will play Pete Mobley, patriarch to the main characters of the Mobley family and owner of a car dealership. [Source: THR.com]

Casting Clack – Clooney on ER, Duff on Whisperer

Bionic Woman’s Michelle Ryan will guest star on a Doctor Who special set to air this spring on BBC One. In the special, titled “Planet of the Dead,” the actress will play a mysterious woman named Lady Christina de Souza who joins the Doctor. [Source: TV Guide Online]

Our dreams have come true! After months of saying he would not return to the TV series that made him popular, George Clooney changed his mind and agreed to appear in an upcoming episode of ER. What could be better than Clooney back as Doug Ross? Having Julianna Marguiles appear in Clooney’s scene as Carol Hathaway! This is great news for all Ross+Carol shippers out there! Melinda Gordon, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, better watch her back because Hilary Duff will play a “beautiful woman of mystery” on an upcoming episode of Ghost Whisperer. Not much is known about Duff’s character but you can bet that she’ll be somewhat involved in the case-of-the-week plot either as the ghost, the murderer or one of the ghost’s family members. Every time a casting announcement is published about someone being cast as a love interest for Ted, people wonder if the person will turn out to be the mother. Add the following announcement to the lot: That ’70s Show Laura Prepon is set to play a love interest for Ted in at least two episodes (Ausiello says it’s five episodes while TV Guide claims it’s two). Prepon’s character is said to be “notorious for cheating on her lovers to avoid having to explain why she’s dumping them” and is actually someone Ted dated while in college. Lance Henriksen has been tapped to play Sheriff Clay Boyd, an intense sheriff who’ll help Gibbs and his team work a case, in a NCIS episode set to air in February. In the episode, the team goes to the Arizona desert when an NCIS agent turns up dead. [Source: TV Guide Online]

A few weeks ago, we told you that Billy Zane would take over the role of Funk on Samantha Who?. Now that Sam and Funk will be officially dating, in comes Funk’s ex-wife Gigi. The latter will be portrayed by Women’s Murder Club Angie Harmon. Supposedly Gigi plays a critical role in the show’s mythology. Could it be that Gigi was involved in the accident that lead to Sam’s amnesia? Maybe she is even the one who caused the accident? [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Chloe and Clark will each have a wish granted when magician Zatanna, to be played by Serinda Swan, appears in episode 17 of Smallville. Chloe wishes to get control over Lois and ends up being in Lois’ body for most of the episode. It’s unknown what Clark’s wish is. [Source: TV Guide Online]

Not too long ago, it was announced that Sara Gilbert was upped to series regular on The Big Bang Theory. Yet, she is practically nowhere to be found on the show. Turn outs that Gilbert is no longer a regular but a recurring as writers were not able to give her character enough story to have her appear in more episodes. [Source: The Ausiello Files]

Casting Clack – Chase on Chuck, Baranski on Big Bang, and Simpson on CSI

Well, her schedule is going to get a bit more crowded as Swingtown’s Josh Hopkins will be joining the show as another love interest for our Seattle transplant. Also joining the cast for a four episode arc will be What About Brian’s Amanda Detmer. She’ll play yet another doctor who strikes up a friendship with Addision. Jeff Fahey, who plays pilot Frank Lapidus on Lost, will go back to the main land to shoot an episode of CBS’s Cold Case set to air early when the show returns with new episodes in 2009. Yet another actor from ER’s past has agreed to return for the series’ final episodes. Alex Kingston, who played Doctor Elizabeth Corday, will appear in the January 15 episode. Very few details have leaked about her character, nurse Elena, but it is known that she will enter the lives of the Suarez family and that her appearance may be tied to the death of a major character. Could she be brought on the show to take care of Ignatio who is rumored to have a heart attack when new episodes return? 90210’s Naomi will be getting a potential new love interest around February Sweeps. Matt Lanter, who lends his voice to Anakin in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and who guest starred in various series such as Grey’s Anatomy and Heroes, has been tapped to play Liam, a bad boy who’ll set his sights on Naomi. Move over Timothy Olyphant and make space for Billy Zane! Olyphant played the character of Winston Funk last season on Samantha Who? However, due to the fact he is now working on Damages, the actor is unable to reprise the role. In steps Billy Zane. The Titanic actor will first take over the role of Funk in episode 15 when he and Sam run into each other. Since Zane is said to be recurring, it wouldn’t surprise me if Sam gives him another chance. What do you think of the casting change? Personally, I don’t think Zane is a right fit for the role. Other actors look more like Olyphant and would have done a good job in the role. In the episode, titled “Stress Relief,” some of the employees watch a bootlegged movie during the workday. The movie stars, you guessed it: Black, Alba and Leachman! Well, according to the description, he sounds exactly like… Henry! Matt is “cute in an unconventional way, smart and career conscious, and friendly yet socially awkward” says Michael Ausiello. Betty and Matt will meet through the Young Editors’ Training Initiative. It’s about time Betty gets some lovin’ don’t you agree? The Riches‘ Shannon Woodward will appear in the final few episodes of ER as Sam’s sister, Kelly. If you thought Sam had her hands full just with raising her son, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Kelly wants to move their ailing mother to Chicago so Sam takes care of her. The drama doesn’t stop there! Dawson’s Creek fans rejoice! Grams is coming back to TV! Not only that but she will also be reunited with Pacey! Yay! The character is the mother of a woman who was killed 20 years ago in an explosion at Walter’s lab. You can bet that she’ll demand explanations about what really happened back then. Laura Breckenridge will create drama when she appears in at least three episodes of The CW’s Gossip Girl. The actress will play an English teacher named Rachel Carr whose young looks will have people mistake her for a student. Actor and director Eric Stoltz has landed a three-episode gig on Grey’s Anatomy. The actor, who directed a few GA episodes, will play a serial killer in need of medical care. Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer will cause some chaos in Chuck’s life when she joins the NBC show Chuck later on this season. Helfer will play Special Agent Alex Forrest, an agent assigned to Chuck’s case when The Powers That Be notice how close Chuck and Sarah are. Not to worry, Sarah is not going anywhere and Helfer is not said to become a permanent fixture on the show. However, producers say that Tricia Helfer could return to the show. Kim Kardashian will appear as a magazine cover of herself in an episode of How I Met Your Mother set to air in January. She, along with Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt and Kendra Wilkinson, will appear in a funny scene during which Marshall tries to find a quiet place to read a magazine and do something that can only be done while sitting on a white throne. The three actors will take life on the magazine Marshall is trying to read and interact with him. Hilarious, no? [Source: People]

Kathleen Quinlan will appear in at least four episodes of Prison Break. Her first appearance will be in the mid-season finale on December 22. Her character is said to be a kickass member of the Company and that she may be so powerful that even the General answers to her! Someone higher than the General in the Company foodchain? Speaking of Prison Break, Muse Watson will reprise his role of Charles Westmoreland in the December 15 episode of the series. Not to worry, PB is not going more sci fi than it already is (how else can you explain all the inconsistencies in the series?). Westmoreland will appear to Michael while he is undergoing surgery. Westmoreland made a good connection with Michael during the first season of the show.
