Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – The complete journey

It was a long, fun road, but my Diary of a Supernatural Virgin has ended. It all started with my sincere question, “Is Supernatural as good as Buffy?” Little did I know that, 115 comments later, you’d all have me convinced that I not only needed to watch Supernatural, but that I just might find it as good — or better! — than the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Do I think Supernatural is the better show? That’s fodder for another post, one you can be sure is coming soon, but for now, let’s just enjoy the journey that was my Supernatural experience.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – The rapture, the levee, the devil, the end

Season 4, Episodes 20-22
I have such mixed feelings about being caught up with Supernatural. Watching all four seasons in a concentrated amount of time had its benefits, but I’ll be anxious to watch season five as intended. Sure, the waiting will just about kill me from week to week, but I can just make up an excited song, as I did for Buffy and Veronica Mars when it was finally their air night. No, I’m not 12 (that’s Julia!); we all have our strange coping mechanisms.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – Kripke’s a god … again

Season 4, Episode 16 – 19
I’ve just about forgotten about those five or so episodes in the middle of season four that had me wondering if Kripke had been kidnapped by aliens and J.J. Abrams, or maybe Greg Berlanti, had taken over for him. You know the pattern: strong start, show with promise, unique premise, lots of heart … down the tubes.
This didn’t happen with Supernatural, I’m happy to say, and I’m also happy to report that I don’t agree with Modwild (yet) when she commented that the show I once knew is no more. Although I would be a little embarrassed to explain the story arc of season four to anyone I was trying to sell the show to, it somehow works (really, if you haven’t said it out loud, try it; it’s hokey) because Supernatural doesn’t take itself too seriously. We can even add “The Monster at the End of This Book” to my list of favorite episodes; this was an amazing batch with all the classic Supernatural formula ingredients.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – You had me at sex and violence

Season 4, Episodes 13 – 15
I’m just not sure it’s normal for someone my age … is it OK that my heart beats with excitement every time I hear AC/DC on the car radio these days? Oh Dean, what have you and your 8-tracks done to me? Or maybe it’s Kripke, and the fact that he’s back in his groove and I’m loving Supernatural once again.
Although I have to say the last several episodes have been decidedly void of cool soundtrack vibes, let alone Impala cruisin’. Now there’s a staple of the formula I seem to have taken on while the boys bicker. Glad I can help out.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – Kripke, why have you forsaken me?

Season 4, Episodes 9 – 12
After I dropped Owen off at Nature Camp this week (oh, sweet freedom!), I was driving home to too-loud classic rock, imagining myself to be the long-lost Winchester sister … have I been watching too much Supernatural?
To tell you the truth, I’m starting to think it wouldn’t be all that much fun to be a Winchester. Man, life is totally sucking for the boys with this batch of episodes, and as a viewer, I’m entering Suckville a bit myself.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – Dark, funny and twisted … and I mean Kripke

Season 4, episodes 5-8
You’ve all warned me of the darkness of season four, but so far, all of the episodes have had nuances of the funny that I like, and there have even been some completely light and hysterical episodes (see “Monster Movie” below). I think what makes season four “darker” is that we’re really getting more into the psyche of the boys, and it should be dark, because they’ve been through a lot in the last four years. It’s just Supernatural staying true to the characters, something they do so well.
Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – season four reminds me of Buffy

Season four, Episodes 1-4
So… wow. They really didn’t mess around with the beginning of season four, did they? Something that the writers of Supernatural do in the most amazing way is come up with logical consequences based on the events and actions in the episodes. Things happen, the boys do something, and it makes perfect sense because there’s such a strong sense of character in this show.
So far, season four is darker, less funny and a whole lot deeper, ripe with back story and angst. It’s wonderful and awful (and I mean that with love) all at the same time. I miss the lighthearted banter between the brothers, but I am also addicted to the path down which the story is taking us, and I revel at the mind of Eric Kripke and his writing staff that they can keep upping the game like this. Supernatural, you’ve come a long way, baby, and you haven’t let me down yet. I’m riding the train all the way to Fangirl Station. Yeah, I don’t think I’ve got it in me to be a fangirl either, but Supernatural is definitely on my list of all-time favorite shows.
