Suits – Winning at any cost

'Suits' deals with the repercussions of Donna's firing. The men all wear tuxedos, while Jessica deals with an old college prank.

- Season 2, Episode 6 - "All In"

Donna was fired over the shredded memo and she’s not back … yet. Her absence was felt throughout the firm.

Would Harvey have gambled to win his client’s company back if Donna was still there? Perhaps. Harvey is a win at all costs kinda guy. Donna was his legal muse. Without her support and feedback, Harvey was still able to do his job and successfully, but he wasn’t complete.

Harvey tried everything to get the company back from a settlement, to legal manuevers, to threatening to bankrupt the company, so why not just gamble to get it back? Of course, to Harvey it was never a gamble. He would “play the man” and win. And, he did.

While Harvey was off with Mike, Jessica was handling the lawsuit against Harvey. Of course, nothing is simple and the judge assigned the case had a vendetta against Jessica. Often on law shows when there is a grudge against a lawyer, it turns out to be a petty grievance or due to a misunderstanding. Not here.

Ella had every reason to hate Jessica. It’s bad enough that the prank was embarrassing, but that wasn’t the worst of it. Jessica, it appears, has always been ruthless. Ella had every reason to be upset, especially since Jessica had absolutely no remorse over her “youthful” actions — wow. I lost a little respect for Jessica over this. Her moral boundaries are much wider than expected.

Suits offers up the legal world as more about manipulations and playing the laws to your favor than showing it as strict law of the land. While it makes for entertaining television, it is scary. What does “trust the system” really mean? If you have an amazing lawyer, then trust it, but if not — are you screwed?

Louis and Rachel made quite the formidable team (even with Louis in his office doing ballet moves). Unfortunately, they didn’t have the correct information and their threats almost left the ballet homeless. In the end, they did right by the ballet even though it cost the ballet great his job.

The fact that Rachel was picked for the assignment over an associate though is both awesome and troubling. Fingers crossed that she passed the LSATs because her talents are being wasted as a paralegal. And, Harold … oh Harold. What are they going to do with you?

The highlight came at the very end. Harvey going after Louis. Wow. I thought Harvey was angry at Donna, but we have never seen rage like we did in that moment. Louis was like a scared cat in the corner. How will he pay? Louis’s misstep may just be what gets Hardman out of the firm.

Odds and Ends

  • Harvey and Mike in tuxes — swoon.
  • Hilarious to see Harvey tell Mike to put on his tux, knowing that he wouldn’t have one. It would have been nice to have seen Harvey fix Mike’s tie. The perfect closure to the whole Tux thing. Hope it is in the DVD outtakes!
  • “I don’t have a tux. I’m not Bruce Wayne.” — Mike
  • “Don’t I know it.” — Harvey
  • Mike was banned from the casino for counting cards. Not surprising.
  • “What are you, some kind of lawyer?” — Mike
  • “I don’t have time to explain where babies come from.” — Harvey
  • Jessica played a prank on Louis and blamed it on Harvey — this is a law firm not a college club, right?
  • “We’re people and sometimes we lose.” — Jessica
“Sometimes? I don’t know about you, but I feel like that’s all we’ve been doing lately.” — Harvey
  • I missed Donna. I’ll be glad when she is back.

Ever blog or board or comment I’ve read today is critical of Jessica’s prank. Somehow, since she is a woman, it is looked on more harshly than if it were men. Pranks in school are now PC adjusted to be considered bullying. What happened, happened. What Jessica did with the Judge in the here and now was to defend Harvey and her firm. She knew what the judge wanted to hear by way of an apology and she knew that saying she was sorry wouldn’t be enough. Jessica is at the top if her profession. She didn’t get there by being soft.

I would have look at a man the same way for this prank and the reason it was done. And, to not recognize it was wrong all these years later, I have a problem with that as well. I don’t have any issue with how Jessica handled the situation now. If anything the judge mishandled the case by punishing Jessica. That’s not honorable at all.

i kind of looked at it as two negatives that cancelled each other.what jessica did back then was wrong, but how did this judge that was revealed to have been at the top of the clas put herself in aposition that she would be so drunk, that jessica could get her necked and land leave her in a class room, she should never have put herself in such a position.now had it been revealed that jesica druged her that would have been a different story, but if she got that drunk on her own then she as to be reponsible for her irresponsibility.

You can’t be disbarred from pulling a prank in law school however horrible … but a sitting judge ruling on a motion as revenge could cost them their job. That is why They must recuse themselves whenever there is a potential conflict of interest.
