Breaking Bad – Questions answered and a new mystery is revealed

So much for easing into the new season. With 'Breaking Bad' blazing toward its finish line, it didn't take any breaths, instead picking up right where season four left off.

- Season 5, Episode 1 - "Live Free or Die"

It is the beginning of the end on Breaking Bad. End dates have been set, stories have been plotted and it is only a matter of time before we say good bye to Walter White and his seriously screwed up life. When we last saw Walter he was taking a moment to savor his “win” over Gus Fring, having bested his rival by manufacturing the removal of half his face with a bomb. Good times.

Season five picked up right where season four left off, with the exception of a little detour into the future and Walter’s 52nd birthday. It looks like the show may be following in the footsteps of its second season where we were left to wonder about the meaning of debris floating in the White swimming pool all season before learning about the plane crash. This year, it’s a bit of very heavy weaponry that is going to leave us guessing. This much is for certain, though: you don’t get a gun like that when things are going great.

Things never seem to be easy for Walter, and the season five premier showed that’s still the case. Walt may have  taken care of Gus and burnt the meth lab to the ground at the end of last season, but he forgot about one little thing: the cameras. The show didn’t even give us time to breath with the new season, with the tension amped up right at the get go. It’s not often that Jesse is the brains in the operation, but he had a great call with the magnet to erase the laptop with all the camera footage on it. It all went down in classic Breaking Bad style; it was a great blend of dark humor, anxiety, and drama.

There were also a ton of questions that got addressed in the season opener. Any questions about Ted’s fate were cleared up when Skyler visited him in the hospital after he woke up. It looks like he is way too scared to say anything to the authorities, but Walt doesn’t seem the type to let a loose end like that stay loose for too long. Also, if there was any remaining question about what when down with Brock at the end of last season, it was cleared up when Saul pulled out the ricin laced cigarette. Walter White is an evil genius, but I’m guessing you knew that already.

With Skyler back in the house and Walt “forgiving” her, I’m curious to see what the future holds for the Whites. Skyler is in way too deep to ever leave, even if she is still freaked out by what Walt has turned into. Can they ever have a normal relationship again? How long before Walt Jr. starts to figure out something strange is happening? How long before Hank tracks down Heisenberg? There are so many questions left before the series ends, and with the heat that Walt is packing in his trunk, I think it’s safe to say it’ll go out with a bang.

I think the answer for what happened to Brock was answered last season. Jesse told Walt that it was not ricin poisoning but a Lilly of the Valley plant. At the end of season four they did a close up of this plant in Walt’s backyard. Then in ep1 of season 5 they showed Walt throwing it away along with the stuff used to make the bomb. I am not sure exactly why Saul had the ricin laced cigarette, the only thing I can think of is that Walt needed a way to get it back from Jesse since Jesse was not talking to him at the time.

There was some question about what happened with the ricin cigarette last season. What we learned (many had assumed it to be true) was that Walt worked it out with Huell and Saul that he would sneak the cigarette out of the pack and make it look like Gus had taken it and poisoned Brock, thus getting Jesse on his side.

Oh I see what you are saying, they didn’t steal the cigarette to use the poison just to set up Gus in Jesse’s mind. Makes sense. Thx.
