30 Rock – Five things I want from the final season

With '30 Rock's' final season approaching, I've been thinking about some of the things I would love to see before the show goes off the air.

It’s no secret now that the next season of 30 Rock is going to be its last. While I will miss the show, I recognize that it’s probably time (maybe even a little past time) for the show to end. Sitcoms can only sustain fresh and funny stories for so long, and while I think 30 Rock has done a very good job at consistently delivering the laughs, it’s just not so fresh anymore.

I’ve been thinking about the final season and wondering what kind of tricks the show is going to pull. You know Tina Fey and company have something up their sleeves. As I was thinking about it, a few things did come to mind:

  • A happy-ish ending for Liz: Yeah, alright, so I’m probably being a little sappy about a completely sap-free show. I have to admit, though, that I would like to see Liz end the series in a happy relationship, maybe even with a baby. I would say the chances of this coming true are pretty good. She did, after all, spend the entirety of last season in a functional relationship with Criss, and by the end of the year she was even able to say the word baby.
  • A shocking death: It doesn’t happen on a lot of sitcoms, but 30 Rock is not like most sitcoms and this is the end — let’s go nuts! I think a funny death could spice up the season. Maybe Lutz could fall down an elevator shaft, die of sadness, or maybe just have something from the set fall on him cartoon-style. I know I would love to see the inappropriate funeral that would be sure to follow.
  • A glorious triumph for Jack: This whole Kabletown business, while funny in an art-imitates-life sort of way, is growing a little old. Hank Hooper is no Don Geiss (or Kathy Geiss … or Devon Banks). He’s always come off as a little too off-the-wall for my taste. I would love to see Jack oust him and have a major victory at NBC. It could be funny watching him actually turn NBC into a power house, in an art not at all imitating life sort of way.
  • A return of exes: I would love to see all of Jack’s and Liz’s ex-flames return for call backs. I loved the episode when Liz was alone on Valentine’s Day, out of her mind on drugs from oral surgery, and hallucinated Drew, Dennis, and Floyd. Now there’s Carrol and Wesley to add to the equation! With the long list of exes that Jack has put together (Nancy, Celeste, Avery, Elisa, and Pheobe) he could have a similar moment. It could definitely be fun.
  • A sendoff for all the best recurring characters: As long as we’re making time to bring back all of Jack and Liz’s exes, why not make sure we check in with some other great recurring characters. The two installments of Queen of Jordan have been great, so I would definitely like to see Angie back. How about Kathy Geiss? There’s probably no logical reason to have her show up again, but it would great to see her. You know Colleen will show up before all is said and done, and with Will Arnett still collecting a paycheck from NBC, I would think there’s a decent chance to see Devon Banks back too. I would mention Dr. Spaceman here, but is his appearance even in question?

What are you hoping to see in the final season of 30 Rock?

I would love to laugh more. Consider having cast share where their life’s & job career in acting will be in a year or 2yrs. Slower voice parts down. Don’t use negative words as much, look very happy & healthy. People need day to day activity to appear hilarious! I will miss all cast members!
