Merlin – The very best of season 2

Ruby and I are feeling a little nostalgic for the good old days of 'Merlin's' second season, so we're going back and counting down all the best moments you just have to see again.

Ruby and I have been feeling a little bereft lately without Merlin to comfort us, or bind us together. It’s like the magic (har har) has gone out of our relationship. What are we supposed to talk about besides Merlin? Our hopes? Our dreams? Our feelings? Bah.

Screw that, said we. We’d much rather take a retrospective look back at the second season, and count down our favorite moments.

Best Supporting Character Scenes

Third Place: Uther Gets Some Troll Loving (From episode 206 – “Beauty and the Beast, Part II”)

Julia: I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the troll episodes were too juvenile in their humor and blah blah blah, whatever. I think they were hilarious. Plus, deep and insightful on several levels. But mostly hilarious.

Ruby: The troll goes, “Ohh!” as Uther sweeps her onto the bed and the romantic music swells in the background. Bahahahahaha! This slays me every time.

Julia: And Uther’s whole “I will behold it” line is really so bodice-rippingly romantic, which makes it even funnier that he’s saying it to a troll. A troll! I think this entire episode is proof that Anthony Head‘s considerable comedic timing needs to be used more often in his role as Uther.

Second Place: Gaius tells off Uther (From episode 207 – “The Witchfinder”)

Julia: Okay, leaving aside the fact that Richard Wilson and Anthony Head acting together is always amazing, let’s just think about this — there is a scene where Uther apologizes and Gaius tells him off. Madness!

Ruby: Gaius, this was your one chance to punch Uther in the face and get away with it!

Julia: Yeah, pretty much the only thing missing is a face slap.

Ruby: Oh how I wish Gaius wasn’t such a gentleman.

First Place: “And you, Uther Pendragon, will go to hell.” (From episode 211 – “The Witch’s Quickening”)

Ruby: Oh, SNAP! She told you where to go. This scene has me so, so excited for season 3.

Julia: I know, right? It is getting seriously Shakespearean up in this joint. Throwdown next season, you’re all invited. Bring your popcorn, it’s gonna be awesome.

Best Arthur Scenes

Third Place: Arthur Enchanted (From episode 210 – “Sweet Dreams”)

Julia: And thus, “destiny and chicken” was cemented in the “greatest pickup-lines ever” hall of fame, next to “If I were an enzyme I’d be DNA helicase so I could unzip your genes.”

Ruby: I would like some destiny and chicken, as long as it’s delivered by Bradley James.

Julia: There’s a long, long line, Ruby. A long, long, long line.

Second Place: Gwen and Arthur’s Second Kiss (From episode 210 – “Sweet Dreams”)

Julia: Yes, it is with great grumbling and whining that I admit that this was pretty awesome. I mean, if Arthur has to kiss Gwen.

Ruby: Ladies, if your man doesn’t know how to kiss you like a romantic hero, show him this instructional video.

Julia: Look at your man, now back to me. Now back at your man. Now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me….

First Place: The Great Pendragon Showdown (From episode 208 – “Sins of the Father”)

Ruby: Bradley James pulled out all the stops here — fantastic acting. The tension builds up so that even the silences are taut with emotion, and then it culminates in that furious sword fight.

Julia: This season just left me in utter awe of Bradley James and his acting range. I know he gets pigeonholed into being the prattish prince role, which leaves him overshadowed by Merlin, but when he gets a chance to really act … holy crapballs. That’s the most PG-rated thing I’ve got to say.

I found out there’s probably only going to be five series. FIVE SERIES!!! Why can’t it go on forever?! :( This amazingness must go on!

Just love what you’ve done and your comments are so to the point – made me laugh your senses of humour are spot on. Please let Ruby know I showed the kissing demostration video to my man, alas ‘no action’, he just smiled and smirked and nothing else. He did laugh at the grunts Arthur makes as he comes out of the spell, I think my man thought this was a reaction to the kiss he’d just given Gwen. I must admit it’s one hell of a kiss on the screen and I’d just loooove to be part of it.
With regards to series 6 (haha) it could be a spin off called ‘King Arthur’ – but I’ve heard that Bradley can’t wait to act without the chain mail. Shame but we’ll have him acting in another production.

PS Bradley is very slim I’ve had my arm round his waist (for real), wow what a moment !!

You’ve had your arm around his waist! I’m super jealous. :-D

Dear Julia, I will be waiting for that essay. Preferably, with a lot of slash. Do not forget your goggles! Ruby should have my facebook account. ktnx. (just kidding, though i’d really love to see that essay, especially if it’s similar to the troll review)

Dear Ruby, I suggest your bring 1 liter bottle of water, sleeping bag, and reading materials (epics will serve you well) for the loooong line to Bradley James’ take out of destiny (and chicken).

I totally agree with your picks! In fact, my ringtone is currently “Merlin’s outburst”. So is my alarm. I wake-up to “You think I sit around doing nothing…”. Thus, I’ve nearly perfected my “Shut up, Merlin” roar. Can’t wait for your next review!
