FlashForward – That cliffhanger is going to be hanging for a long time

'FlashForward' completed its run with a cliffhanger ending and lots of loose ends.

Well, the finale of FlashForward certainly didn’t feel like it was a series finale, did it? I wasn’t sure if they were going to have a chance to force some sort of ending on it after it was cancelled. Turns out they didn’t. With the ratings as bad as they were, I can’t imagine that ABC wanted to drop any more money into the show. After tonight’s episode, though, even with the cliffhanger ending, I’m just not that disappointed that FlashForward won’t be coming back. I know it had its fans, and for all of you, I am sorry. This show had the potential to be great. It certainly had one of the greatest pilots that I have ever seen. It just never lived up to that potential, though.

The finale wasn’t a terrible episode by any means (not like last week). As much as I hate Mark, I have to admit that it was a little fun watching him kick some ass inside the FBI building. At the end of the day, though, everything felt a little predictable. Maybe that’s because just about everything that we saw play out was previewed in the very first episode. Sure, there were small changes, but if you ask me they all seemed a wee bit trivial. So Janis is having a boy instead of a girl and Olivia and Lloyd are just making out instead of sleeping with each other. So what? The fact is that nothing really changed.

Heck, Simon and Demetri couldn’t even stop the second blackout from happening. Didn’t we all sort of see another blackout coming? Aside from the fact that there were images of Joseph Fiennes saying, “there’s gonna be another blackout” running on ABC for what seemed like months, I’m not sure how the show was going to function without people whining about their future. Seriously, though, season two looked like it might be interesting, with the second blackout flashing forward a lot further than just a few months. Alas, we’ll never get to see what a second season may have been.

There were certainly a lot of story lines left floating. The real motivations and story behind the organization causing the blackouts was never really clear. With Frost’s big map that we saw earlier in the season, I would guess that they were trying to prevent the end of the world by seeing how it happened. We’ll never know.

Are you sad to see FlashForward go? What did you think of the finale?

I just finished watching the season finale of “FlashForward”…it was unbelievable! But if left so many new questions unanswered! I cannot fathom how in the hell ABC can consider picking up a sucky show like the “Ghost Whisperer” and not renew “Flash Forward!” Flashforward had the makings of being a phenomenon like “Lost”. It had the mystery, the drama, the action. This is the fifth show that I enjoyed that ABC has cancelled that I truly enjoyed. I really don’t think that ABC understands “real” ratings. In today’s world people don’t just sit around the tube, we Tivo, we download episodes, we watch streamed content online, and some still use the VCR. And plus it does not help when shows take a four month hiatus in between episodes……thats the quickest way to lose a fan base. ABC, is truly F*@king up!

May 27, 2010 at 11:48 PM

I totally agree with Will…they shouldn’t have taken the 4 month break…if they hadn’t we may not still be stuck in April on there…LOL…they shouldn’t bring in new, crappy shows…why don’t they drop The Bachelor…what can they do on that show do they haven’t already done…the last 20 seasons..lol. I DVR every episode and then watch…It’s not like we aren’t watching at all!!! Come on ABC!!! Don’t F-up!!!!!

May 28, 2010 at 1:49 PM

No worries. ABC passed on The Ghost Whisperer too. It was official this morning.

watched the final episode via download, and paused every “FlashForward” at the end of the episode in order to capture any clues for the next season. What I found out were these depictions of different events that happened in no particular order.
First the obvious ones they want you to see, keep reading this gets good: Each Flashforward will have my theory, please Im open to criticism.

1. The Black Baby getting Baptized: Possible Demetri’s son because him and Zoey get back together.
2. The wedding ring on the finger (Black female hand, light skinned male hand: Also a sign that Demetri and Zoey ARE getting Married.
3. The Boy on the Swing : Possibly Janis’ son and the Banner of 2015 read next for same theory.
4. The banner of Happy New Year 2015: Possibly the “Actual” year they are Flashing to, the Boy swinging seems about 5 years old which matches the Janis Son theory.
5. The Boy and the gift; I think is related to the same boy theoretically the Son of the late Janis ( I will explain this)

6. The signing of the will: Possibly Binfords “Will” there is a man sitting in the background looking as though it may be HIS will, Possible Binfords faking his death to continue the investigation incognito, You can almost see his face, but the mind plays tricks…also theories include Janis’s or Keikos, (will also explain)

7. The loading of the Revolver: The weapon that kills either of the three previously mention, Keiko (most likely) or Janus.
8. Theres a brief flash of a device Naming F. Walsh for his Chest Xray: Theory, possible shooter, unknown character. the doctor looks like the Ultrasound Dr. for Janus
9. The Dice Key chain: looks to be an Old womans hand handing it off to a black guys hand, unknown significance, possibly Binfords keys to something secret.
10.The note Dated March 14 2011: seemed to be addressed to someones name starting with a “B” could be a goodbye letter, or a “if your reading this, im gone” letter.
11. And Charlie at the End speaking to someone: Obviously teasing to Binfords where abouts, the Male voice I believe is Dylan’s voice, Simco’s Son. Also 5 years older.

OK! Are you ready for the NOT SO OBVIOUS! I slowed the video down and paused each Frame to depict any sort of other FlashForwards that may have occurred. When the Scene Backs out to the shot of the earth just as the “wave of the future” strikes, a barrage of “Flashforwards” come flying at you insinuating the next black out and it proceeds to show you every one is down and out. WELL, that barrage of Flashforwards was in fact VERY REVEALING!! HERE WE GO!

1. You see Janus laying in a hospital bed either Giving birth or Dying. Xray’s could be hers F. Walsh could be her alias or Real name since she’s CIA
2. You see Keiko lying front down facing you lifeless on the pavement, obviously dead.
3. You see a man of Asian decent in a shirt and tie behind bars looking as though hes just admitted to killing someone.
4. The little boy from above, his face is shown, but blurry.
5. You still see all 11 events from above intertwined, including the Kangaroo, and Bryce and Keiko holding hands under the table.
6. Janus’ son and death theory. the reason I think this is because the Doc, says shes having a boy. the banner depicts 2015 which would place him at about 5 years old, about the same age as the boy in the swing and pajamas opening the gift. With Janus dying, possible gunshot, cancer, or birth complications, she leaves the boy with his father, Demetri. Remember Demetri never had a Flashforward, and everyone loved Dem, so why not close the season flashing bits of his happy future…

PLEASE people, I posted this and registered for this site in hopes somebody noticed wht I did, and so far I have ad to type all this up because no body noticed…Does this not make the story that much more interesting!?! Please leave your thoughts you have no IDEA whats its like not being able to share this with anyone, lve, so I can hear your thoughts. Post back lets hear some theories!

May 31, 2010 at 8:59 AM

Jay, I share your angst and consuming curiosity. You’re probably right about the identity of the baptized baby and wedding couple, and most other interpretations. I didn’t see everything you saw, but I’ll look again. I think Keiko was merely passed out from her new flash forward. I thought the x-ray, will signing and gun loading meant Bryce’s cancer returned and he planned suicide again, but the Walsh name threw me. The flash forward perpetrators and their purpose were never explained, and we never found out why VP Clemente never got to be President. Are Jericho and its backers simply exploiting flash forwards to make money and gain world control, or prevent a 2016 earth cataclysm? Why don’t animals also pass out during flash forwards, or were the airport dog and street kangaroo wearing those rings as Jericho mercenary pets? What more does Tracy know about Jericho and flash forward experiments? Perhaps Demitri is briefly blamed and arrested for enabling the second flash forward? What becomes of Zoe’s Hawaiian vacation/wedding/funeral? Did Keiko’s “by-the-rules” mom see herself inexplicably fighting with airport security during her first flash forward? — that would explain her sudden out-of-character hissy fit. I would also like to see Bryce’s face when he next runs into Nicole after her miraculous fated rescue.

Just watched it online. Not sad that there isn’t going to be another one..but did enjoy it whilst it lasted. If it had been more popular it would have just gone on for ages….like lost (what a load of crap that turned out to be). I will remember it with fond memories. Also…note to Jay..I LOVE THE FACT THAT YOU PAUSED EVERY FRAME AND WROTE IT UP. YOU ARE A LEGEND. Crazy people like you make the world/internet a better place.

Is there any chance of you contacting the originator of the story, like you did “Defying Gravity” and try to get an answer as to where the series was going, answers questions, and possible ending. The idea that they were trying to see how the world ends to prevent it is intriguing.

Loved tonight’s finale!!! Please don’t cancel the show! I love it and watch every episode! Pleas bring it back on soon…it’s lots better than Lost and it just kept airing!!! Very excited to know what happens next!!!! PLEASE don’t cancel Flashforward!!!

May 27, 2010 at 11:18 PM

It’s already been cancelled, theres no hope for it, it’s dead. Don’t fool yourself into thinking it will come back. It was a show that started with promise but devolved into a crappy show.

May 27, 2010 at 11:29 PM

Better than “Lost”? Uh…

May 28, 2010 at 1:31 AM

Funny thing is I honestly believe that the show could’ve worked if the characters didn’t suck that much ^^;

May 28, 2010 at 1:47 AM

Remove “characters” and replace with “the character of Mark Benford” and I’m right there with you, buddy.

Sad part is that they had so many of the parts already there. I was LOVING the dynamic Janis and Demtri at the end of the season. Put those two as your leads, and make the show more about the conspiracy and less about Benford’s family life, and you’ve got a really watchable show.

I mean, Annabeth Gish, for Pete’s sake!

May 28, 2010 at 7:34 AM

Yup that’s what I meant. He’s just so annoying. And I don’t really think it’s the actor (though he doesn’t manage to make the character interesting either).

I really like Demetri as well and John Cho even more (in his other roles). It’s too bad but compared to “Lost” at least we can simply read the novel and find out what the show was based on.

May 28, 2010 at 8:04 AM

Funny story about Annabeth Gish. I totally didn’t recognize her in this role – she looks a LOT different than in her X-Files days.

However, in one scene, I said to myself “Gee, she sounds a lot like Annabeth Gish.” It wasn’t until the next episode when I saw her name in the credits that I realized it WAS her.

A few monts ago, Keith McDuffee interviewed the creators of Reaper after that show was cancelled by CW, and we found out what ideas they had for the rest of the show, what they were planning to do next season;
since FlashForward left so many open questions, obviously banking on the idea that the show would be renewed, I’m wondering if history could repeat itself?:D
I know they changed the showrunners a lot, so that might make things more difficult, but maybe we could get some answers. Pretty please :)

May 28, 2010 at 8:33 AM

I gave up on the show just before the long break and never came back, mostly due to hearing it was just OK and the ratings sucked. So I may have a hard time asking specific questions regarding the direction of the show, had it continued on.

From what it sounds like, though, I doubt they had anything worked out for a new season. But I’ll think about it. :)

May 28, 2010 at 2:45 PM

I’m glad this trainwreck of a show is over, and I’m sure I could see hints that the actors themselves were glad as well. You could see some of the actors like Jack Davenport almost smiling when trying to look serious. And I have to admit, while watching it, I had what could be the most genius idea ever (either that or completely not). Personal audio commentaries for movies and tv shows on dvd / blu ray. If the player has a hard drive, then you can record your own commentary on the show. Why would that be interesting? It wouldn’t, but when you watch a trainwreck like Flashforward, you can come up with really funny personal commentaries that would amuse friends and family. I honestly watched the finale adding my own improvised bits of dialogue and commentary and I made myself laugh for ages in that desperate, low blood sugar kind of way, as I begged for the episode to end.

It’s actually a shame because the overall concept behind FF was good, but executed with a bit too much self importance while the visions of the future simply lacked any emotional or intellectual punch. And despite the fact that character’s lives did overlap, their visions were pretty much all over the place. Joseph Feinnes as Mark Benford will go down in tv history as one of the worst bits of casting ever seen, one of the worst performances, while the character itself was full of cliches, perhaps contributing to the bad performance. But as Dennis Hopper once said, he’s been in a few crap films, and all he can do is try to take something crappy and turn it into gold (Space Truckers being a perfect example). Even the best actor will struggle if they’re given crap material to work with.

May 29, 2010 at 12:04 AM

Hi everyone!
I did not understand the last episode (sorry…) Could some of you please explain that to me? I mean, what happened to Mark at all? And what did Charlie see in her vision? Who was found out?
Please, somebody answer me!
Thanks :)

May 29, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Dalila: No answers to be had on those questions. It was all left up to be a cliffhanger, but as the show was not renewed, there’s little chance that the audience will get those answers.

I gave the show 12 episodes and then I just got absurdly bored with it and gave up.

i really liked the show. please give me more of fw. thank u/

June 1, 2010 at 2:44 PM

I’m gutted this show isn’t coming back. Best series of all time. PLEASE ABC- BRING IT BACK! The show could be better than Lost, which to be honest got dull at the end.

June 2, 2010 at 12:19 PM

I like this show. Seeing your future, and having it basically come true takes some of the suspense out of it. I know, it’s not about the end, it’s about the journey but still It’s hard concept to pull off I think. I’m sad to see it end, but I’m not heartbroken.

June 2, 2010 at 1:23 PM

This show had a decent concept but they did a horrible job telling it. It was too drawn out and was poorly cast (in some cases) …

The finale was good though …

If I was selling a network a show, I’d require them to provide $$ for a story-line wrap-up movie on the chance they don’t renew the show for another season.

June 2, 2010 at 8:42 PM

Saw the finale, and LOVED it! It did make me kind of ticked when they ended it all in one big cliffhanger, though. If only ABC would bring it back for another season …

Pretty much, I loved the series, loved the episodes, and I do hope ABC will consider and bring the most epic show of all time back. :)

Hi Jay, Nice work,
I noticed a few of the last flash forwards. Although i knew the show was coming to an end I think that they made a heroic atempt to give us clues as to what would have happened . I was upset that it would not have a proper conclusion but not as much as the 4400, which I loved.and got hashed up at the end of season 3… and how pleased am I that I stopped watching lost after season 2 :) If they keep cancelling shows that I like and saving the rubbish as someone said earlier like Ghost Whisperer… i kind of need to give up watching them… or sky + them until the second season to see if it will go anywhere… True Blood seems to have disapeared from my TV ,that had better not be cancelled too?? Well must get back to my Smallville, which so far is still going…thank god!

June 8, 2010 at 11:16 AM

I AM SO FRIGGIN PISSED OFF! I loved flashforward, and although predictable, was a great series im my opinion. I was sad ot hear it was ending, but not too disapointed becaseu atleast it would end how it’s supposed ot like the story. But when it ended with the massive cliffhanger, I was SO ANNOYED! Sure there was a hitn or so, but it was a rubbish ending! -_- they could of atleast givne a little bit extra, I’m sure theer’s going to be lots of complaints besides mine of fans out there…
