Private Practice finale pulls a switcheroo

Don't you hate it when you feel like a character is killed off just for shock value?

- Season 3, Episode 23 - "The End of a Beautiful Friendship"

I was annoyed. After sitting through this Private Practice finale — which reminded me of the season premiere when everyone sat in the waiting room awaiting news about whether Violet would survive the violent removal of her baby from her womb at the hands of an unhinged patient — I didn’t like where this episode went in the end, but I suppose that was the point, wasn’t it?

Killing off Dell? Really? Rendering his poor daughter Betsey — who lost her meth-cooking mother this season — an orphan? What a crappy ending for this character who’d matured from being a surfer boy at the reception desk lusting after Naomi, to a responsible dad who’d become a midwife and had just been accepted to medical school. Did he really need to die in order to make this season finale more exciting? I think not.

There was plenty of drama with the Maya situation and all the romantic partner swapping. The car accident — Maya was in labor and Dell was driving her to the hospital when a drunk driver hit them — broke Maya’s back and Dell was thought, initially, to have sustained only minor injuries. In order to spare Maya from paralysis, the baby’s life had to be jeopardized and, for a while there, it looked as though the baby wouldn’t make it.

This finale was built around everyone trying to hold it together in the face of all this, particularly for Violet who had perhaps the most salient lines: “A year ago I was dying. And we got through that, we got another year under our belts and once again, here we are, in the same place, with somebody else … I just want to scream to whoever keeps doing this to just stop, stop bringing us here with another one of our own dying.”

The twist of having Sam operate on the drunk driver who hit Dell and Maya’s car was an interesting one, as was having Pete lie to Sam, saying that this was just some other inebriated dude who needed saving, not the same one who hit his daughter’s car.

But the scene with Dell saying goodbye to his daughter — telling her that she’d live a happy life because if something bad happened to him she would have gotten all of the bad things over with early– was heart breaking and cruel. Nobody seemed to really care about Dell as he sat, with broken bones in a cast, in the waiting room and Naomi, in a conversation overheard by Dell, casually blamed him for the car accident, saying that if Maya had called her instead of Dell she wouldn’t have been in this situation. Nice.

The small bit of light in this episode came in the form of Cooper proposing to Charlotte — “I have to be with you. We have to be together.” — and then withdrawing the proposal after Dell died so he could ask her to marry him on a happier day.

The Cooper-Charlotte reunion was one of several romantically healing moments, which I can only imagine were intended to serve as salve to blunt the sadness of the Dell and Maya situation. Addison gave Pete permission to return to Violet, which he did. William told Gabriel he could pursue Naomi because he was leaving town to go stay (and die of ALS) with his daughter. Addison, in the last scene, went to Sam and asked if she made him happy. When he said she did, she replied, “You make me happy too.” She shed her clothing and joined him on the sofa. Sure, the main couples were back together, but Dell was dead and I was in a snit.

What did you think of the season finale? Anyone else feel badly for Sheldon?

Honestly, I’m not sure how much I care about them killing him off. I watch the show so obviously I like it on some level but it’s so over the top with the soap opera drama that I’m immune to actually having any feelings for any of the characters any more. It’s a guilty pleasure but the characters just aren’t ‘real’ to me anymore. *shrug*

I’m not worried about Betsey. Seriously – with all the women on this show lusting after good children, she can very easily fit into the cast. Addison can’t have children? She just had Dell’s. Tada!

i was hoping that the big death would be Naomi… i really hate that character!!!

This show has been so over the top this year. It’s been really upsetting, but sometimes it’s hard to stop the ball rolling while being somewhat organic.

I think the next season (has it been picked up??) will be much better.

i think its bullshit they killed dell of and that really pisses me off they should of killed that fucking salt and pepper baby instead leavin betsy with no parents is fucked up idk what made the stupid fuckin ppl decide to do that twist but i think it was a huge mistake im tempted to not even watch the damn show anymore because it was a very stupid idea to kill him off just stupid!!

um, ‘salt and pepper baby’? That sounds a bit questionable and there’s no need for racially derogatory comments –

Regarding Dell, I liked him as a character, but based on an interview I read with Chris Lowell the process was mutual. Shonda Rhimes realized Dell just didn’t merge organically with the rest of the cast and felt he either received 1-line per ep or was ‘forced’ in. She tried to do a better job this year of writing him in, but Lowell decided that if his contract weren’t renewed by PP he’d prefer to get killed rather than just ‘written off’ -

Dell had such a small part his death will not have any impact on the show. Loved the finale. It was the best episode of the season. Loved all the Charlotte. She’s my favourite. So happy Charlotte and Cooper are getting married next season!!

Ooohhhh, I was so POed & heartbroken when he died. I, unfortunately, saw it coming. I was even talking to my sister sayin “Why doesn’t anyone care about Dell???” Then, I figured there would be something seriously wrong with him. I wanted to rip Naomi’s head off when she blamed Dell (I know, it sounds like I’m talking about real people here, lol!). I freaking bawled from his speech to Betsy until they actually killed him off. I really do wonder why he left the show or got the boot, whichever happened.
I feel sorry for Sheldon, too. Cause, he lost Violet to Pete with the baby not being his & then Charolette to Cooper. Even though I wanted those couples back together, it sucks for him.
I agree in thinking that Addison will try to adopt Betsy since she has to stop pretending to be mommy to Violet’s son. Grrr. Addison is my least favorite. Screw what makes you happy, ya don’t get with your bf’s ex husband. Besides, who doesn’t make her happy? She goes for anything.
At any rate, sans Dell’s death, I can’t wait for next season!
