Bones needs to add Diedrich Bader to the cast

With Andrew Hacker and Temperance’s date tonight, you’d think I’d be all about seeing him off the show as quickly as possible. To the contrary, I think he’s been a great addition, more specifically based on his relationship with Booth.

- Season 5, Episode 18 - "The Predator in the Pool"

As someone rather, uh, strongly advocates the immediate coupling of Bones and Booth, I’m sure the title of this post is a bit surprising. Diedrich Bader was added as a recurring cast member in the fifth season as just another obstacle on the road to that goal. With Andrew Hacker and Temperance’s date tonight, you’d think I’d be all about seeing him off the show as quickly as possible. To the contrary, I think he’s been a great addition, more specifically based on his relationship with Booth.

I don’t like the idea, and haven’t for some time, of Seeley Booth as an FBI agent that seemingly reports to no one. Sure, Caroline Julian fills that role to an extent from time to time, and we’ve seen other senior FBI types that Booth has reported to off and on over the years, but nothing consistent. I’m not necessarily saying that he needs to be reigned in, but I like the dynamic that Hacker has developed with Seeley, and would like to see more of it.

As much as Booth eschews Hacker as a potential suitor for Bones, you can tell he likes him as a boss, even so much as clarifying that he thinks he’s a smart doofus to Bones. As a boss, Hacker showed concern for his employee, and the professional savvy that Angela pointed out to Bones. More Hacker is a good thing for Booth as an FBI agent, and as for us as an audience.

Notes & Quotes

  • “You don’t get to be Deputy Director of the FBI by just dressing well and kissing ass … OK, yeah, that’s most of it but I’m probably right about the aquarium.” – Andrew
  • “Shark attacks are very rare, I mean look, sharks don’t even like to eat people.” – Booth
“That’s true, how did you know that?” – Brennan
“Shark Week, you know where they do nothing but make you afraid of sharks.” — Booth
“Wait, they have a week set aside just for sharks?” – Brennan
  • “I look like Richard Dreyfuss, don’t I? We’re gonna need a bigger boat!” – Hodgins
  • Yeah, the chances of me diving in a closed environment like that with multiple sharks? About the chances of me starting to watch Jon and Kate Plus Eight.
  • I get irritated when people just “stop by” Booth’s office; you can’t get into an FBI Regional Office without an appointment or unescorted … Not that I’d know from personal experience, or anything … nope, not at all….
  • Has Jazz Gunn not heard of Power Point? Or Keynote? Welcome to the 2000’s, buddy.
  • “We’ll get [the angel fish] back to you, don’t worry.” – Booth
“I may or may not get them back to you.” – Bones
  • The murderer really had a creepy look on her face when she talked about being pain free.
  • I must have missed a throwaway line that explained Vladov’s exclusion as a suspect, anyone catch it?

Couldn’t agree more. Baader is a great addition to the cast. I just hate it that they make him look dumb. I don’t need him to be overly intelligent but somewhere in the middle between Booth and Brennan would be good.

I loved your take on the 100th, but this latest observation regarding Deidrich Bader is preposterous. His character has no chemistry with Bones. I don’t see Booth having any respect for him. He practically laughed at his attempt to be the hero in Proof in the Pudding. Also if I think my boss is a duffus smart or not he or she is still a duffus. That doesn’t equate with respect. The character is written is such a way that I ask myself how this individual got into his position of power at the FBI.

I think if you ignore the first episode he was in, and really just look at the last two, specifically tonight, you can’t complain with his dynamic with Booth.

As far as Bones goes, I don’t care much because I’m confident that she and Seeley will be an item of some kind by the finale.

Because if they try to stretch the tension out another season, I might not be able to stomach it.

Sorry but Hacker is an idiot. He is unliked as a character and greatly miscast. To have him as a boss of the fbi and a love interer is unbelievable.

Hacker is vastly unpopular and is an absolute disgrace as an FBI. Booth barely treats him respect. If you want a boss, look back to Cullen, he had class and respect. Hacker is a smarmy jerk.

Funny, most people said the exact same thing when they added Scott Grimes’ Archie Morris character to ER, yet he ended up becoming one of the absolutely best things about the second half of the show’s run.

I really agree with you. As much as I don’t like him as a partner for Bones, I really like the character of Hacker. He is really funny, especially in The Proof In The Pudding, and he is most definitely charming. I totally get Bones’ interest in him (although personally I wouldn’t give him a second chance with Booth around). If they could cut the romantic ties between him and Brennan for good with no chance of reprisal then I would be absolutely up for his addition to the cast, or at least for him to have a more regular guest role.

Sorry but Hacker is a waste of air time. I’ve been a Bones fan from day one but if he becomes a regular I’m done. I’ll tune back in for the series finale.

If you want oversight for Booth bring back Cullen, or Dr. Goodman at the Jeffersonian. I loved them!

No, no, no!!! I will not accept that!!!I liked Hacker but only in first ep with him.. but then they’ve made an idiot from him especially in 5×15 and I will never accept him as a Bones partner… He is just way to ugly for her and to stupid… also as a Booth’s boss he is not reliable because we all have comparison with Cullen… so thank you for your ideas but I will vote for NO!!!

I’m not sure that at any point I advocated Hacker as a potential mate for Bones, in fact, I think I’ve made my stance on who Bones should be with very clear over the last couple of months.

Cullen was great, sure, but he did six episodes in the first season. He’s not been a part of this show for a long time, nor was he ever a major part of it.

Hacker is a great character in the same way that Archie Morris was a great characters on ER. He was hated in the beginning by most, but by the end of the series, he was one of the more beloved characters in the history of the show (For those of us, you know, that didn’t quit like five seasons in).

I disagere, how can he be whole the time? I don’t mind him, but we are waiting for B&B together. Ok I don’t want to them having sex in the finaly, if the have I’ll stop watching Bones, I like them have a kiss or declaration of love, but not sex. Ok Booth has catfish for 2 epiodes but why Brenn will have Andrew whole time, cannot stand it…
If he stays more stop watching, I swear. B&B should be starting becaome a cauple, litlle steps will be great :)At the end they have to be together!!!

I like the character of Hacker, I found he’s quite lovable. Though it’s obvious he’s not gonna get Bones, at least we can enjoy he frets Booth. I have to admit I love when Booth is in a stew!

Let me think for a second. No. What an awful idea. NO. He is a stupid ass kisser.

April 29, 2010 at 6:17 PM

You don’t have to be a likable character to be an interesting character, and good addition to a cast. I again point to Archie Morris on ER.

April 30, 2010 at 1:39 PM

On the one hand I think Hacker is a doofus. Booth barely shows any respect for the guy. Hacker is only concerned for Booth because of Brennan.
On the other hand Booth having a boss would show us his rebellious streak. Especially a boss that seems like he could be easily manipulated if Booth really tried.
So keep him around. But stay away from Brennan

ugh i wish things wouldnt be so complicated with booth and brennan! Hacker just makes everything worse. he needs to stay away from her.
