Legend of the Seeker – Richard Cypher vs. The Mummy

Tombs and cursed mummies with glowing eyes! Special Kahlan and Cara moments! Is it even possible not to like this episode?

- Season 2, Episode 16 - "Desecrated"

Richard Cypher searches a tomb for Cara and Kahlan in "Desecrated."

Perhaps this post would be more accurately titled “Richard Cypher vs. The Mummy’s bandages.” I enjoyed this episode, even though the beginning was a bit cheesy. (I understand Cara not joining in the Renaissance Faire dance at Richard’s birthday bash — she probably noticed how silly everyone else looked doing it.)

Things got exciting in a hurry, once the Nygaax silently popped out of its tomb behind the back of an oblivious Richard. No one noticed its glowing blue laser eyes in time, so the mummy — I mean the Nygaax — escaped to hunt down five victims selected by a grieving father/conjuror, Cormac. I was ready to peg this as simply a mummy rip-off, but then came the neat twist that the Nygaax is not the dead guy but, in fact, the bandages. Once Zedd became the killer mummy, I really got into the story! Fun, fun, fun. At times during this episode, Craig Horner reminded me of Brendan Fraser. But, you know, I’m such a fan of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. (On a completely unrelated-to-Seeker note, every copy of that third Mummy movie should be cursed and sealed in a tomb for all eternity).

Another part of this episode that I’m sure got the hearts of Kahlan and Cara fans racing was the climactic scene in which the Mord-Sith and Mother Confessor admit their friendship for one another, embrace, and then proceed to beat each other up as their air in the sealed tomb runs out. Then they collapse on the floor, and Kahlan holds Cara’s hand while they wait for Richard to come to the rescue. Awww, special moment! Very cute. I seem to recall a commenter who mentioned that she wanted to see Cara and Kahlan’s friendship develop. It looks like it’s happening, April!

Finally, if you saw the promo for next week’s episode, I’m sure you recognized John Rhys-Davies – our favorite dwarf from The Lord of the Rings. It seems he will guest star as Panis Rahl, Richard and Darken Rahl’s father (in the TV version of events). I’m looking forward to it. Are you?

Thanks so much for posting these so promptly every week! Love them!

Anyways, I just wanted to say I too, LOVE The Mummy movies and that yes, “every copy of that third Mummy movie should be cursed and sealed in a tomb for all eternity” !
But back to Seeker, I thought this episode was good, but not GREAT. It seemed like another one of those “something’s-wrong-must-find-magical-instrument-to-stop-it-while-saving-a-member-of-the-group-before-time-runs-out-episode”. Overall I liked it, but didn’t love it. (Though I did love seeing Cara open up to Kahlan! Awwww…)

Thanks again!

The first Fraser/Weisz Mummy will always be the greatest of them all, but I actually enjoyed the entire Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, even with Bello subbing. Of course, it helped that Crystal Skull had plumbed new levels of suckage in the same genre three months earlier.

The best part of the episode was, of course, both Cara and Kahlan offering to kill themselves so that the other might live long enough to be rescued.

I cannot tell you how utterly giddy it made me to see the development of Kahlan and Cara’s friendship. I must have re-watched their scenes together a hundred times at least. It was very cute. One of my favorites episodes of the series.
And Zedd being possessed by the cursed bandages was definitely a plus.

As always, I continue to enjoy your reviews. :)
