24 – Jack’s only challenge has been keeping his suspects alive

Does Jack need more of a challenge besides trying to keep his leads alive long enough to find the uranium rods? I think so.

24 - Jack Bauer during Day 8So far this season, Jack has been trying in vain to keep one of his leads alive. Every time he gets close enough to smell those uranium rods, his suspect ends up getting stabbed in the eye or shot … or locked in a pressure chamber with a bundle of explosives strapped around the waist and a crazy man on the phone. Do you think Markos will survive and break the cycle?

I’ll admit that I found much of this episode dull. Kayla and Tarin don’t interest me, and we saw a lot of them tonight (now, if Tarin turns out to be an evil, manipulative bastard and takes Kayla hostage, then I might become more interested in them.) Fortunately, things picked up during the latter part of the hour, when the half-American terrorist Markos arrived at the hospital. I was genuinely worried about Owen, the scared little CTU agent, but Owen’s fear actually worked in his favor when it came to playing along with Markos until Chloe could disarm his explosive vest. When the detonator didn’t work, I expected Markos to shoot Owen before eliminating Farhad, but I guess that would have been too cruel to show on TV, like shooting a puppy.

Jack shows again what a pro he is at leading a team in the field (though I have to take points away for yelling at the medic), and this season has made me feel nostalgic for the early seasons when Jack was officially working for CTU.  The problem is that all of this seems way too easy for Jack — the season’s big threat has been a cakewalk for him so far. Electrocution? That all you got?! Come on, writers! Throw something bigger at Jack! Make him break a sweat.

Okay, so what else happened … Hastings grew a backbone and told Weiss to eff off. I’m sure that felt good. Dana, despite her feeble efforts to protect Cole, managed to turn her pure, incorruptible fiance into a criminal. Kevin and Nick now sleep with the fishes, but I suspect this isn’t the end of Dana and Cole’s problems. President Hassan seemed more like his old self, reasonable and gentle. Maybe Farhad’s betrayal has not completely changed him.

Although this wasn’t the most exciting episode, I like where it ended. That idiot Markos has locked himself in a pressure chamber. I’m sure Jack will come up with a some creative way to use that to his advantage.

What did you think of the latest episode of 24? Boring? Exciting? Both? Leave a comment, and share your thoughts.

Why can’t Jack just cut off the oxygen to the Oxygen Chamber, and make the guy pass out??? Just wondering…

It would still take a while for him to use up all of the oxygen in the tank, probably enough time to detonate the bomb. If they had a way to suck the oxygen out, then that would be another story but then there’s still the question of how do they get the door open?

We know from the preview that this isn’t the end of the story for Dana since someone comes a-lookin’ for Kevin. I love how the show is so fluid in bringing new cast members in and letting them go throughout the story. I really like Jennifer Westfeldt, but I suppose we won’t be seeing any more of her and I haven’t seen Mare Winningham since she was the queen of the Made For TV movies back in the day, so it was cool to see her pop up. And now Stephen Root is driving into town! Love it!

I wonder what Faraday would say about the Cell reception in a gas chamber. But why am I bother with these details when a 3.1 GHz signal can disarm a bomb detonator ^^;

24 for me is great popcorn fun. All the time I have Cartman in my head shouting “How can I reach theeeeeseeee kiiiiiiiids” when Jack tries to get something done. *snicker*

I mean come on, how can you take _anything_ on this show serious anymore? Starbuck has had this look of “I need to go to the bathroom” on her face for three episodes now. I had to wipe away tears last night while watching ^^;
