Modern Family makes a splash down

- Season 1, Episode 14 - "Moon Landing"

“Do people want their real estate advice from someone who leads, or someone who follows? I’m bettin’ these babies (points to mustache) are coming back in a big way. Buy low, sell high. People are going to see this and say, ‘That guy’s high.'” – Phil

Poor Gloria and Mitchell. Her bad driving could have been a hilarious story line, but this week, it was outshined by the other two. I’m going to have trouble writing up this review, since my vision is still blurry from laughing until I cried. Repeatedly.

Claire being jealous of her skanky friend (why is Minnie Driver so good at playing a bitch? See Will and Grace) wasn’t what got me. It was when Claire tried to bring Valerie home to her family to show them off that had me roaring, because it was so absurd and so true all at the same time. Murphy’s law is that your kid will be wearing his underwear over his pants when a new member of the playgroup comes to your place the first time … but I digress.

Haley throwing things out the window at Dylan, then subsequently making out with him in the foyer. Luke naked in the kitchen, clutching a bottle of Jägermeister after seemingly having an accident, a very wet accident. Alex chasing a rat. Phil being locked in the porta-potty, “concluding a little business. Quite successfully I might add.” And Claire calling Phil “Mario.” Does it get any funnier than that?

Quite possibly it does, because Cam and Jay had a moon landing in the gym locker room. You know the place, Cam’s showroom (according to Jay)? I was really disappointed they showed this scene in the previews because it was so funny. However, once I saw the splashdown scene with Jay and the man he thought was Cam, I understood why they could spare that other scene for the ads. Crying, people. Tears streaming down my face.

Other things worth mentioning:

  • Luke imaging the cool school made of recycled bottles.
  • “I can’t imagine you working.” – Luke, to his mom
“Luke, that is very offensive to women. Your mom works very hard. It’s just now she works for us.” – Phil
  • “I don’t take kindly when someone Tom Selleck’s my park bench.” – Phil
  • “What’s Jägermiester?”- Alex
“Well, um, you know when in a fairy tale there’s always a potion that makes the princess fall asleep and then the guys start kissing her? This is like that, except you don’t wake up in a castle, you wake up in a frat house with a bad reputation.” – Phil
  • Say Anything, Dylan. And please, stop talking. You’re making the generation gap even more embarrassing for Phil.

Did you all think this was one of the funniest episodes of Modern Family yet?

It’s going to hard to find an episode that will top “Fizbo”, but this was pretty damned funny…..

Every thursday I’m running around shouting “Manni” like an idiot because it’s so frickin funny how she pronounces it.

Oh and also because it’s the german nickname for guys called “Manfred” – like the whooly mammoth on Ice Age. *snort* *giggle*

“Splashdown!”

Best written comedy show on TV, with Cougar Town in close second.
