If this is Ugly Betty’s final season, who should Betty end up with?

Betty has a big crush on bad boy, Bobby.

According to E! Online, the writers of Ugly Betty are debating who to pair Betty with at the end of the series. Henry, Gio, and Daniel were mentioned as possibilities. Last night, the writers teased us with a kiss between Betty and Daniel (who admittedly thought she was Molly). Let’s take a look at the guys in Betty’s life and try to figure out who would be her perfect match.

Matt. I really thought this relationship was going somewhere. Matt’s a little bit quirky, like Betty, but also genuinely nice and caring. It doesn’t hurt that he’s rich and good looking. The only negative I see here is that he’s a bit immature, but so is Betty at times. I think this would be a fairy tale match for Betty, but sadly it doesn’t look like it will happen. Amanda has her eye on Matt. They keep growing closer, and I have to admit, they make a really cute couple. (How adorable was it to see Amanda feeding Matt while his fingers were sprained?) Perhaps Matt will be Amanda’s fairy tale match instead of Betty’s.

Gio. I think most viewers either hated Gio or loved him, but for me the biggest problem with Gio is that he’s been out of the picture for so long. It would be so random for him to reappear out of nowhere and win Betty back, just as the series is ending. I liked Gio’s persistence and the way he used to irritate Betty. It was cute. But I can’t see Betty with him long-term; the sparks just aren’t there.

Henry. The nerd love between Betty and Henry was sweet and endearing. The chivalrous accountant was probably Betty’s first true love (not Walter!), and Henry left most unwillingly to be a father to his ex-girlfriend’s baby. Still, the fact is — he left her. I know, he asked Betty to marry him, but he clearly gave Charlie’s whims priority over Betty’s needs. Does Henry deserve another chance to be with Betty? While Henry is one guy that I see as a legitimate match for her, simply because this would bookend the series nicely, I would be disappointed if Betty went back to him after he made his choice.

Daniel. Wow. This idea feels so wrong to me, and yet on the show on which Ugly Betty is based, Yo soy Betty, la fea, the Colombian Betty marries her boss on the series finale! Is this unthinkable? Betty and Daniel’s friendship works so well that the thought of a romantic relationship between them is ridiculous. I don’t know how the writers could make this work. I only like one thing about this scenario — it would demonstrate that Daniel has finally evolved to the point that he can see inner beauty as more important than outer beauty.

Some other guy. Betty could end up with another guy (hey, Bobby from last week’s episode, “Backseat Betty,” was pretty hot). Unfortunately, there is not much time left for us to get to know and love a new character, and this ending would be lackluster.

No one. I see this as a strong possibility. Remember the end of Season 2, when Betty had to choose between marrying Henry or going to Italy with Gio? Predictably, she rejected both of them and went her own way. Since Betty is very young, she doesn’t need to settle down just yet. I suppose this is also the easiest route for the writers to take. But I would be very disappointed if they chose to leave Betty single at the end of the series, because that would imply that a smart girl like Betty has to be satisfied with knowing that she’s an empowered female … she may never be loved but at least she’s empowered! Hah. Believe me, smart girls deserve to have both.

I don’t know how all of this will turn out. I really wanted Betty to end up with Matt, but now I’m kind of hoping that Daniel falls in love with her, just because that would be totally, utterly bizarre. Who do you want Betty to end up with? Share your thoughts below.

I think that if the show had followed the arc of the international Ugly Betty versions, Betty would’ve wound up with Daniel. Unfortunately, rather than allow Betty or Daniel grow, the producers decided to keep the pattern of a nerdy girl who wants to be a journalist (yet never becomes one) going until this season when they realized the cash cow needed to start giving milk. So, yes, it’s too late at this point for Betty and Daniel to switch to more than friends as they’ve been more than friends in the brother-sister way for almost 4 years.

Although I see Henry as the viable option considering they brought him back this season to sway Betty’s heart (again), this time she was the time to say farewell. At the same time, when she said ‘bye’ it was with a lusty light in her eye.

In the end, Betty will probably wind up alone. I’m just upset as the show started off well, but then it lost its focus. Rather than continue to parody soaps while satirizing the fashion industry and providing a realistic portrayal of a working-class minority family, in season 2 it became a full-blown soap with baby-momma mysteries and refused to allow its character to grow any further. So, I wish it could get a season similar to Scrubs in which it puts itself on track before its swan song (even if Scrubs then re-booted), but any of the options you’ve listed save ‘Gio’ and ‘Some other guy,’ due to your reasons, will probably work.

I agree with you about the show losing its focus. I wrote a post called “Has Ugly Betty lost its charm,” which describes my thoughts, which are similar to yours.

If Betty ended up with Daniel I think I might actually go back and watch the last season and a half that I missed. I remember a Christmas episode awhile back that made me think they would be good together.

I blame ABC/Disney for “Ugly Betty” losing it’s focus and sense of satire and whimsy when they fired Marco Pennette. The show lost it’s voice when he was let go and it’s never been the same since. I still watch, mainly for Wilhelmina, but ABC wanted more mainstream primetime soap and less over-the-top and that decision completely altered the show, and not for the better.

Betty NEEDS 2 end up with Daniel. Why cant they just be 2gether like in every other Ugly Betty series out there?! Even without ever knowing about the original Betty La Fea, I always wanted em 2 hook up,ever since I saw the pilot, there was no question about it, that these 2 were guna b 2gether, but this is just BS. Henry? GIO??! (WTF) Like he was ever a candidate 2 begin with, nd Matt.. He’s Daniel 2.0, i mean y bring sum cheap replacement, when u got the real thing rite there?!

I would love to see Daniel fall in love with Betty – I just wonder how it might happen. As An pointed out, they currently have a brother-sister kind of relationship, so what would be a believable way to trigger a change in that relationship? Hmm.

She should be with Daniel but we can’t trust the writers to get anything right,no wonder the show is sinking fast.

Betty and Daniel forever! And no other varient to me! If it’s not gonna happen I’m not gonna bye any dvd of any season of UB and lots of people I know will do exactly the same thing. Don’t get why the produsers want to lose so much. Aren’t they tired of the falling raitings? For what and for whom are they making the show anyway?

Come on, Daniel & Betty all the way ! It’s so obvious they belong together.
I like that they are such a nice honest duo. They are good for each other and bring out the best in one another.

I love Daniel to Betty, I would be happy in life if this happened in show.Hes are soul mates, I just do not understand why people say they are like brothers … this is absurd, not because I am Detty a fan, but because they do not act like brothers, who believe he has a brother can prove that this behavior is that els with one another are neither brothers or friends, but romance.
I’m watching this whole season for the first time I see a light at the end of the tunnel that the writers can at least be emphasizing the idea of a Detty the show.
Also the show is sinking because of the dissatisfaction of Betty’s love interests, the ewscritores make fans like ping-pong, playing not only with fans mainly Detty, but with every other fan of the show.
Many are leaving to attend the show because they do not want to give audience to the show, not because the characters are bad, so instead they are great, but for writers, fans are not giving change for all they are doing with us especially in this season 4 and also because the show is being passed ace Friday, a day which many people also do not see because they have to go out, after all it is Friday and the staff goes out to have fun, see vanos up with change in the time and day the audience increases and can be renewed our Betty!

It appears that Ugly Betty will be moving to Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.

Daniel and Betty really should end up together! Throughout the series I think they have had a very steady and natural buildup from boss/assistant, to a great working-relationship, to a deep rooted friendship that really defines them both, which I can see making a very believable transition into love if the writers do it right. I’m still holding out hope for my favorite couple since Mulder/Scully of The X-Files, I just hope the writers don’t screw it up and they do the right thing and give us the Detty ending, a lot of us want! <3

Okay, so this is rather strange, as everyone seems to think that Daniel and Betty should end up together, but I don’t see that working at all. I think that Matt and Betty have the best chance of surviving now that they’re back together. I mean, Matt was actually voicing how much he wanted to have a future and a family with Betty. I’ve always viewed Daniel and Betty as destined to be friends.

The most recent episode does seems to suggest that the writers are planning to pair Betty with Matt (assuming this is the final season – if it’s not, then anything can happen).

February 3, 2010 at 11:11 AM

The most likely candidate is Daniel Meade. He has admittedly vocalized on several occasions that he needs Betty in his life. We all see how he’s learned from her and evolved for the better because of her. As uncomfortable as it may feel upon first thinking of this match…the more you ponder…the more it makes perfect sense. Can you envision a life where Daniel exists without Betty? In my opinion, no. The only screw in this cog is: can you envision a life where Betty exists without Daniel? Yes. Whereas Daniel has changed a great deal,(amazing and believable character arc), Betty has been a constant in his life and her character has remained consistent through all 4 seasons. There’s not much room for improvement for “ugly” Betty, hence just one of the show’s many ironies. Betty’s previous failed relationships aren’t (just) because she always needs a challenge, it’s because those guys weren’t right for her at that moment in her life. We also have to keep Betty’s own insecurities in check. She’s always kept herself on a pretty tight leash and it’s kept her from opening up fully. I think that in the last episode, as Betty gets her braces removed, the metaphor will see Betty through to full blossom, whoever she does (or doesn’t) wind up with.

February 13, 2010 at 6:14 PM

I would love to see Betty and Daniel together. I’ve watched them grow closer over the 4 years and believe that they would be good together. It’s like Daniel’s Dad knew that Betty would be good for Daniel and that is the reason that he had hired Betty. He knew that Daniel would one day mature (grow up)& then he and Betty would suit one another in friendship & romance.

March 11, 2010 at 6:04 AM

Definitely Gio. THE SPARKS ARE TOTALLY THERE! You just have to watch the old scenes. I do agree it’s really hard to pull a Getty at this time… shame on the writers.
Of all the suitors Gio is the only one that seems to have a real positive influence in Betty (really pulls her to go forward in her life, not only her Mode life). The most realistic and balanced character of the love interests. Their relationship goes from playful friendship to sexy and they shine in scene.
For whichever reason the writers dismissed their season 2 stars (Gio, Cliff, Christina, Alexis) he must have given a longer presence. I don’t think they’ll end up together because there’s only 4 episodes left but HE SHOULD HAVE! I hope it’s an open ended finale so we all know she’s going to return to London and be back to Gio.
