True Blood – What the hell is going on with Maryann?

MaryAnn and Daphne

True Blood has been hitting on all cylinders this entire season. Bill has finally woken up from his coma, Jason is getting himself into all sorts of trouble, and we are finally getting into the vampire mythology outside of Bon Temps. Oh, and Lafayette…. You’ve got to love Lafayette.

I do have to admit I’m growing a little tired of the Maryann storyline. It’s a damn shame too, because I love Michelle Forbes. And, let’s be honest: who doesn’t like a magic infused orgy? Or even better, one like every week?

We still haven’t technically figured out what Maryann is. Sure, all signs point to a maenad, but who really knows? She’s the worst kind of house guest. Sure, she throws big parties, but the hot water heater goes out, and she goes into full three-day-old house guest mode (you know, like three-day-old fish?). Linked to what she is, is who she is; and what the frak is she doing in Bon Temps? It’s time for some answers, methinks.

Now we find out Daphne, who I actually had some hope might be a positive influence on Sam, is the pig that Andy has been chasing around town. Can Sam turn into multiple animals, or is he stuck with just being the cute puppy? So much for him being in a decent relationship this season. With us getting a look into how evil Maryann is, I have some doubts about where things with Tara and Eggs are going.

Other thoughts:

  • I’m still really loving the Hoyt & Jessica relationship. It brings a different tone to the show, which this week was well appreciated.
  • The tone to which I refer was set with the Bill and Lorena flashback. Talk about a little freaky.
  • Is Sarah really not happy with the way things are going with Steve, or is it something else?
  • The chance Godric actually gets all meltly-like on the platform? I’d say slim to none.
  • Terry’s bonding with Lafayette was a nice touch. I like that they let some of the red herrings (Terry’s PTSD) from last season flow into this season.
  • Eric is sending Lafayette back to work? There’s got to be some type of power play going on, and I’m curious to see how it plays out.
  • Why did Eric bring Lorena into the mix, and how long will she be around?
  • How long will it take before Jason learns Sookie is at the church, and how long will it take him to step up to the plate?
  • The whole exchange between Luke and Jason was great, but this was just classic: “But all of them put together ain’t half as bad as if you do it to a vampire. Or to a dude. Or to a vampire dude. That’s like the creme de la creme of sins. There’s no repentance for that. Straight to hell, baby.”

I was kind of skeptical about Daphne to begin with, and then I couldn’t stop wondering about her “bull-man” wound and then I kept thinking Maryann had something to do with it and then she became a pig and I was thinking “I knew it!”(actually I blurted it out). I hate Maryann, I want to see something good to happen to Tara and every time she gets away from Maryann, there she is again. Jessica is my fave character so far this season besides Sookie, Bill, and Lafayette. I think it’s a physical think with her, but still she’s like a teenager all over again but with certain attributes that makes her “to die for” shall we say. I loved it when Hoyt told his mama that his girlfriend is a vampire.

Yeah, it really is time for the storyline to get moving into a direction that doesn’t bore the heck out of me.

You’re right, Jessica has been a breath of fresh air for a show that you wouldn’t think would need it.

Okay I have to say that I formed the theory that Maryanne was like circe (the one who kept odysseus and his men on that island in the Illiad ) she has all the signs of it……..association with and ability to force shapechangers, the feasts and the sex.
Now the intro of the minotaur into her little cult thing makes he think i was right. After all in greek myth her sister was the mother of the minotaur.
She is also the daughter of the sun god and a nymph (explains the sex thing too)

oh yeah and I love the jessica/hoyt thing too……..very sweet and cute thing going there. Helps lighten the mood without actually removing any dark aspects of the show.

Ivey, I just watched Season 1 on DVD and when Sam explained to Sookie that he was a shape shifter, she asked could he turn into any other animal and Sam’s response was that, yes, he could, but it took a lot of energy. Turning into puppies was easiest for him because they were not as complicated as other animals.
