Robot Chicken Star Wars: Episode II – DVD review and giveaway

Boba gives the finger

I reviewed Robot Chicken Star Wars: Episode II when it aired last November, so there’s no need to get too much into those scenes that I liked, and that are included on this DVD set. I will say, though, that what you get on this DVD is well worth owning, especially if you’re a fan of the series.

The DVD consists of two versions of the show: the standard one that aired on TV, and an extended version that includes a whole slew of additional skits. The extended version includes, by my count, about 25 additional scenes. I honestly don’t know why they weren’t included on the broadcast version in the first place, as there are some real gems in there. I’m sure it had to do with time constraints.

The only reason I can see for watching the standard version of the DVD is to enable the “Chicken Nuggets” special feature, which doesn’t work with the extended version. These allow you to push the select button on your DVD remote, to see brief commentary scenes related to some of the skits, whenever you see a small chicken icon superimposed in the corner of the scene. They’re all worth watching, and I wish they’d just included them along with the extended version, as well.

Highlights of the additional scenes in the extended version are “My Little Tauntaun,” Greedo’s Apartment, Tauntauns missing their friend, Obi-Wan & Yoda’s “Certain Point of View” musical number, Darth Vader and the garbage disposal, Admiral Ackbar playing “Pyramid” (the secret word: Trap), and Death Star debris raining down on the Ewoks. Here are a few quotes to tease you:

Han Solo (looking at his medal): “‘Hans Olo?’ Come on.”
Luke: “Mine just says ‘Participant.'”

Emperor Palpatine (referring to a map of the Death Star): “‘You are here?’ Where’s here?! Aww, I’m not even in the right hemisphere!”

The extras on the DVD don’t end there. There are more behind-the-scenes features than you could hope for, along with a demo of Seth Green‘s animation meeting, a time lapse of a few of the scenes being shot, and some video blogs. Something I learned from the extras that I didn’t know before: Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and even Ahmed Best reprised their roles in voice form for the show — that’s awesome!

Now for the giveaway! I’ve got three copies to give away to three random commenters below. All you need to do is tell me which scene from the show is your favorite so far — you can refer back to my original post to see some of them. That’s it! Just leave the comment by next Wednesday, July 29, at 5 PM ET. We’ll pick three winners completely at random, and alert the winners after the contest ends. Only one entry per person, and you must have a valid U.S.-based mailing address. Not following these guidelines voids your entry.

‘Emperor’s Bad Day’…”hey crayola, help me close this vent…”

July 23, 2009 at 9:25 PM

While I really loved Palpatine’s visit to the new Death Star, I really liked the tag scene because it shed new light on things.

It never made sense that the Empire was defeated just because Palpatine was dead, so learning they had to do both that and destroy the second Death Star makes everything clear! “So what do we do now?” “Fancy a massage?”

July 23, 2009 at 9:46 PM

“This deal is getting worse all the time! Dinner with Vader is classic!

Without a doubt, Boba Fett in the Sarlacc bragging about how awesome he was doing.

July 27, 2009 at 3:04 PM

I disagree that “Racing At-Ats” was only funny at the end. The revving, the cliche baby carriage w/ a wampa twist. It was my favorite so far. (Although I agree the Free Willy bit in that sketch didn’t quite fit.)

July 27, 2009 at 3:08 PM

The whole Take Your Daughter to Work day scene was my favorite.

July 27, 2009 at 3:12 PM

Definitely: Storm Trooper Take Your Daughter to Work Day!

July 27, 2009 at 3:13 PM

“Alderaan chunks everywhere!”
Big fan of the dinner scene.

July 27, 2009 at 3:18 PM

The best one is “This Deal is Getting Worse all the Time”. Not only is the Vader voice perfect, but the reaction of the Stormtrooper and Boba Fett in the background is perfect! It’s those types of details that make RC the awesome show it is.

July 27, 2009 at 3:21 PM

My favorite was the Dinner with Vader scene, especially the interplay between Solo and Boba Fett, and Vader’s “reenactment” of the destruction of Alderaan — too good!

July 27, 2009 at 3:34 PM

I like Stormtrooper’s Take Your Daughter to Work Day.

July 28, 2009 at 7:14 PM

“This Deal’s Getting Worse All the Time” just goes to show why you shouldn’t provoke a sadist by talking about things being “unfair”.

My all-time favorite Robot Chicken Star Wars sketch is the one where the Emperor takes the call from Vader right after the first Death Star gets blown up. “Oh, now he’s crying.” Hilarious!
