TV on DVD for July 21st

We’re still a week away from the #1 DVD release of the summer, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fine wares hitting shelves this week. A few of USA’s favorite characters show up, with season sets for Psych and Monk. Speaking of characters, has any show had a more unique collection of them than Pushing Daisies? And The Mighty Boosh? It’s just a character bonanza this week. You can also be on the lookout for new offerings from Stargate, Prison Break, Route 66, SpongeBob, and a host of others. My pick of the week would be Pushing Daisies. The big list is after the jump.

Psych: The Complete Third Season

As we are all well aware by now, characters are welcome at USA. And Shawn and Gus are two of their finest. Season 3 continues the now familiar Psych tradition of fun cases, over the top performances, and a plethora of obscure references that are a game all on their own. Standout episodes for me are “Daredevils!” (with guest star Jeff Fahey) and the horror homage “Tuesday the 17th”.

Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season

I still think of Pushing Daisies as one that got away. I don’t really fault ABC for canceling the show, because the numbers truly were dreadful. The fact that we have two seasons worth of episodes to look back on is still pretty good. It’s just a shame that more viewers weren’t drawn to what was a very funny, and absolutely unique, series. Olive Snook easily earned a spot on my personal list of favorite TV characters. Two of them, actually…

Monk: Season 7
How would Shawn explain his USA character-ness? Perhaps, “I learned it by watching you, Adrian. I learned it by watching you.” Monk is the OG USA character. Season 8 is just around the corner, but even after 109 episodes, the quirky investigator is still a treat. He’s so good, even his commercials are worth watching. Look for a fun appearance from Steve Zahn as “Mr. Monk’s Other Brother.”
The Mighty Boosh: Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3

The Mighty Boosh has had a strange journey that stretches back better than a decade. The recent run on [adult swim] has brought a new recognition to the show on this side of the pond, and now it’s getting the full DVD treatment. If you like the crazy English humor, this will be right up your alley. Also, it falls under the Richard Ayoade rule. Never pass up anything with Richard Ayoade.
