True Blood – Sex, lies, and sponge baths

(Season Two, Episode Five)

It’s all about the relationships tonight. From the inappropriate (yet irresistible) to the epic to the downright cute, we saw a variety of couples on display tonight. Most of the pairings are working pretty well. It’s nice to see some people that you never thought would form any romantic relationships on the show making things work.

So things between Jason and Sarah have finally come to a head (wow, that wasn’t on purpose). Jason is a slave to his personality. For all of his intentions of being a “better” person, it’s just not going to happen. Even before tonight, though, I’ve had some doubts on Sarah’s piety. Either way, the real curiosity in that story is Steve. There’s just something about that guy….

Sam has finally found someone that he can open up to in Daphne. Now that we know that other shapeshifters exist, does anyone else find it odd that Sam had never met another one before her? Daphne will bring some positivity to the otherwise dour Sam, but I think she’s going to end up being more trouble than she’s worth for Sam.

I’m glad they didn’t just drop the Jessica and Hoyt relationship. Its a little out of left field, but the two of them have similar backgrounds. Its cute, actually, though I couldn’t say that telling a girl, vampire or otherwise, about a comic book is the way to her heart, but I think Jessica is different enough.

After hearing about Godric for several weeks, we finally get to see him. I didn’t expect him to be so “young.” I hope that we are going to be learning more about the turning of new vampires and how the dynamic between Maker and Sire works. I think that whatever the norm is, however, the relationship between Godric and Eric will be unique.

  • Sam still hasn’t asked Daphne about her scars. I’ve got to tell you, considering how bad and odd it is, it might be one of the first things out of my life.
  • I know Sookie thinks herself  a little badass, but I think my attitude would be a little tempered walking into that meeting.
  • I don’t really get Arlene’s hostility to Daphne. I mean, sure a little hazing is okay, but she seems to downright hate her. Arlene and Terry do make an interesting pair.
  • Lafayette is definitely down from his “Dance of Joy” high from last week. You know there’s going to be some long-term repercussions on his personality after his ordeal in the basement.
  • I don’t know what to think about where the MaryAnn story is going. Yes, there was finally some movement tonight, but there’s no way Sookie is just going to let them move in.
  • Barry the bellhop came and went pretty quickly tonight. I wonder if, though I doubt that we will, see him again.
  • It took me a second to recognize who the vampire was at the end, but then I remember that they showed Bill being turned in the “Previously on….” Looks like his Maker will be around for at least an episode or two.

What? No more Barry??? No way! That’s the character I’m most interested in right now. I don’t have any spoilers but I feel pretty certain he’ll be back. True Blood seems like it’s plotted very carefully. I don’t think they would waste time introducing a new character without planning a full arc for him.

Good stuff this week from True Blood! The handjob in the bath was a bit, er..

I really enjoyed Eric’s flashback scene. The thing I love about vampires and other immortals is learning about their long and varied histories. Hopefully there will be some more flashbacks in future episodes.

Interesting but predictable that Bill’s maker would show up eventually.

I hate to say it, but the cast is getting pretty big and needs trimming a little. There’s a lot of plot threads running: finding Godric, Barry the telepath, Jessica’s new found vampirsm, Sam and Daphne, Jason and the CotS, and Mary-Anne’s manipulation of Terra. I guess really it will all converge into 2 or 3 threads at some point, I just hope it gets a move on.
