The Week Ahead – Churchill, Daisies & a spelling bee!

Into the Storm

Just because most of your broadcast TV shows are gone for the summer doesn’t mean there’s nothing to watch. And you know we wouldn’t leave you hanging. So here’s a rundown of some of this week’s hotspots.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • NBC thinks they know what TV’s 50 Funniest Phrases are, and they’re going to take 2 hours to make their argument. (Tue. 8pm)
  • Pushing Daisies is back to wrap its second season, burning off its last few episodes before making way for Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money (Sat. 10pm, ABC)
  • And you thought there was nothing on! It’s The 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee. What’s really said is how many viewers at home couldn’t hold a candle to the spelling skills of these kids. (Thu. 8pm, ABC)
  • HBO offers Into the Storm, a follow-up to The Gathering Storm, chronicling the further “adventures” of Winston Churchill from ’40-’45. (Sun. 9pm)

PREMIERES & FINALES

  • Obsessed is a new series on A&E that looks at people with obsessive compulsions. I don’t know why, but I find quirks like this fascinating. (Mon. 10pm)
  • Fox’s Mental premieres, bringing us a crazy treating the crazies. (Tue. 9pm)
  • TLC debuts Little Couple, which features a pair of newlywed little people, who are even littler than the Roloffs. I guess they want the story from the beginning. (Tue. 10pm)
  • On Memorial Day, Jon & Kate Plus 8 kicks off it’s 5th season so we can see if either of them kicks the other one out. (Mon. 9pm, TLC)
  • HBO’s fantastic In Treatment wraps up its 2nd season, 7-week, 35-episode run with three final episodes. (Mon. 9pm)
  • Reaper wraps its season, and possibly series on The CW (Tue. 8pm), and while Breaking Bad will be back, season 2 wraps on AMC. (Sun. 10pm)

NOTABLE REPEATS

  • Animal Planet is marathoning Planet Earth all day on Memorial Day (in Hi-Def if you got it). The world is beautiful and now you don’t even have to go out into it to see it!
  • Sam & Dean must confront the spirits of those they couldn’t save over the years on The CW’s Supernatural. (Thu. 9pm)
  • It’s the Family Guy episode featuring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The cameos alone are worth it! (Sun. 9pm, Fox)
  • DirecTV, the channel, is launching for free (if you have DirecTV) Deadwood (9pm) and Oz (9pm) on Sundays from the beginning!
