HIMYM – What’s the difference between peanut butter and jam?

HIMYM Pregnant

Actually, before we get to that joke’s punchline, I wanted to mention that this episode goes down as both the worst and the best examples of hiding pregnancies on a TV show ever. The worst because Robin clearly looked very pregnant throughout the episode, with no real humor thrown in to make it laughable (like Lily overeating, for example). The best because of the peanut butter/jam joke being so vile that it caused Lily to conveniently disappear for four weeks.

As to the punchline to the aforementioned joke? Wait for it …

… you can’t peanut butter your dick up someone’s ass.

As for the rest of the episode, I related to the fantasy sports thing a bit. I did a bit of fantasy football in my day, but luckily for the people I was up against, there wasn’t thousands of dollars at stake. The office I work at now isn’t really big enough to have “that guy,” really. In past jobs I can think of a few “that guys” who really would rather they weren’t known as “that guy,” like “smelly guy” and “guy who doesn’t wash his hands after going to the bathroom guy.”

Something that’s worth talking about in another post would be how Ted’s situation parallels with Michael Scott of The Office this season, both of them going the route of starting their own businesses in the wake of being laid off or quitting. It was only a matter of time before current shows would start longer themes around being without a job — even Marshall and Barney were using their “that guy” scheme to help secure Marshall’s position at GNB.

It looks like they’re gearing up for Barney and Robin to finally hook up come the end of this season, with only Ted not knowing of his secret (well, besides Robin, that is). And I agree with Marshall and Lily: they’re kinda perfect for each other.

That was a let down. I didn’t expect it to be funny though.

April 13, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Ted has known Barney’s secret ever since the episode Ted and Robin were f**k buddies

April 13, 2009 at 10:28 PM

I actually found the joke extremely hilarious. Just tried it with my girlfriend and the PB is quite messy.

April 13, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Will: Ted knows Barney/Robin slept together. He DOESN’T know that Barney IS IN LOVE with Robin (THAT’s the secret).

April 13, 2009 at 10:40 PM

its an ok joke. where did you find the punch line?

April 14, 2009 at 9:46 AM

I found it through Google ;)

April 13, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Bryan: Actually Ted does know that Barney loves Robin. That’s why he called off his and Robin’s “roommate arrangement”. The episode was this season for crying out loud.

April 13, 2009 at 11:07 PM

Hey, Ted knows about Barney’s feelings for Robin. Rewatch the episode “Benefits”.

April 13, 2009 at 11:10 PM

I thought the joke was funny…and i’m a girl.

April 13, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Yeah, I thought the joke was funny too. And very impressive that the joke made it to network TV. Not the punch line, mind you, but close enough!

April 13, 2009 at 11:59 PM

I agree that Ted knows Barney loves Robin and I laughed as well… It’s pretty classic.

April 14, 2009 at 12:20 AM

My wife made me look up the punchline and we both laughed like crazy, maybe cuz tried

April 14, 2009 at 12:21 AM

not a girl, a chick

April 14, 2009 at 12:22 AM

love the killer ninja in the end, great episode, though robin bumb was really anoying!!! :)

April 14, 2009 at 1:00 AM

I agree. The joke is the absolute best thing I’ve heard in months. Definitely made my week. P.S. I hope they don’t actually make Lily leave for four weeks. But I’d understand if they do. She’s been looking highly pregnant for about a month now.

April 14, 2009 at 1:03 AM

I think that the reason they are aunt robin and uncle barney is because they get married.

April 14, 2009 at 1:39 AM

That can’t be the real punchline, it isn’t raunchy enough and it doesn’t take advantage of the obvious pheonetic word play. The real punchline has to be something like.

What’s the difference between peanut butter and jam?

You peanut butter down her throat, but you have to jam it up her ass.

April 14, 2009 at 2:30 AM

Mr right’s punchline is the one that I knew of. I didn’t know there was a tamer version.

April 14, 2009 at 10:10 AM

I’m female and I laughed out loud just now reading the punchline. So dirty, I love it. And yes Ted does know about Barney being in love with Robin.

April 14, 2009 at 12:16 PM

I think the original answer is funnier. Mr. Right … I think the word play with peanut butter and “pee nut butter” is a bit of a stretch.

April 14, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Lily (or Alyson hannigan) actually gave birth to her baby daughter on the 24th of march… which also is her own birtday :)

April 14, 2009 at 1:13 PM

The proper punchline is:

I can’t peanut butter my dick down your mom’s throat.

April 14, 2009 at 6:28 PM

i loved the first punchline lmao!!! but i cant belive that so many others were also looking for the punchlineI HIMYM is a great show.

April 14, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Hi there,
English isn’t my mother tongue. Can someone explain the punchline in details?
Thx!!

April 14, 2009 at 9:06 PM

To Bardod,

If I’m not mistaken, the explanation to the punchline would be that you can’t peanut butter your dick up someone’s ass, although you can jam (stuck) your dick up someone’s ass.

I found this episode actually kinda great, but seriously it’s obvious that Robin is pregnant, and it’s kinda lame that they’ve tried to hide that.

April 14, 2009 at 11:43 PM

Bardod,

English IS my mother tongue, and I didn’t get it at first.

April 14, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Hahaha “mother tongue” hahaha

April 14, 2009 at 10:13 PM

what’s so funny about “mother tongue”. your lame.

April 14, 2009 at 11:44 PM

I don’t think it was necessary to make jokes about Cobie Smulders (Robyn) being pregnant. I remember several TV critics giving kudos to “Seinfeld” for not bothering to cover up Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ pregnancy and not bothering to acknowledge it either. Since the pregnancy wasn’t written into the show, and since we’re all adults who understand how babies are made, it’s not necessary to acknowledge the actress is pregnant. We can see that and it’s not pertinent. Just because Alyson Hannigan’s pregnancy was used for one joke doesn’t mean pregnant bellies need to be a running punchline on this show.
Also, some chicks dig dirty jokes, although I understand they were trying to get rid of Lily’s character due to Hannigan giving birth.

April 15, 2009 at 1:57 AM

punchline aside… I actually didn’t know Cobie was pregnant although it is obvious now, but honestly I don’t mind when shows just ignore it.

April 15, 2009 at 2:15 AM

Well first of all I have to say I loved that episode cos of the joke. When I started watching it I just had to pause it and find out the punchline of that joke. I laughed hysterically for half an hour, almost choking to death. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was watching it at 5 in the morning I don’t know =)

Mahn himym is some funny shit!

May 3, 2009 at 9:09 AM

tell me please that joke i did not understand anything.

April 15, 2009 at 4:43 AM

GNR? What, Axl is working there too? :-)

April 15, 2009 at 5:27 AM

What secret is Ted not aware of?
Ted actually knows that Barney is in love with Robin…

April 15, 2009 at 5:55 AM

@andreas : no he was jus angry at barney for sleeping with robin..he doesnt know barney is actually in love…

April 15, 2009 at 7:18 AM

Yes he does, that’s why he stopped sleeping with robin when they wouldn’t stop fighting after she moved in…

April 15, 2009 at 12:50 PM

I don’t get the joke.. Can somebody explain?

April 15, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Youri,
You can jam your dick up someone’s ass.

April 15, 2009 at 6:08 PM

didn’t expect that punchline…!

btw now that you pointed it out i see robin’s pregnant, they try to hide it by her sitting down or holding a bag but at some points it is clear!

April 15, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Yeah, Ted definitely knows that Barney loves Robin, he finds out in the episode where Ted and Robin are friends with benefits, called “Benefits”, season 4 episode 12. Barney denies it but its pretty apparent that Ted knows.

April 15, 2009 at 11:53 PM

I actually enjoyed your insight on this episode, but it is called GNB (Goliath National Bank), not GNR.
Aaron.

April 16, 2009 at 7:59 AM

im sorry, you are insightful but..
you ve to know what you are watchin better before commentin..
in friends with benefits storyline, ted found out barney was in love with robin and thus stopped sleeping with her..,

what you are sayn about him being mad for sleepin with robin was back in 3rd season..

and it is GNB not GNR

thank you..

April 17, 2009 at 5:06 PM

yea, ted definitely knows that barney is in love with robyn, he found out the episode where ted and robyn start having sex again as room mates in order to stop fighting so much.

April 17, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Ok, guys.. I am foriegn and I really cannot understand what’s funny in that joke.. Is it some word game or what?

April 17, 2009 at 7:54 PM

It’s a pun. Jam can be the fruit spread you put on a sandwich with peanut butter, and it can also mean to force. So when you ask the joke, you’re thinking it in the fruity sense. :) Does that make sense? Maybe someone else can explain it better.

April 18, 2009 at 12:23 AM

yeah so lame script with hiding the pregnancy..

April 18, 2009 at 1:53 AM

Thank you, GTB! Now I got it :-)

April 19, 2009 at 8:43 PM

Ted definitely knows the crush Barney has, if you guys still remember Ted confronted Barney a few episodes back. (Plus, remember the ep was talking something about “when you get back with your ex, someone always gets hurts, it just wasn’t ted and robin”)Plus it was the only reason Ted stopped sleeping with Robin overall.

This brings up to the next point: Ted is an idiot to re-hire pj after he fired him, when he already knows the Barney secret. Or he should have re-fire him again, this is the only thing I realized that doesn’t add up in the episode.

P.S. the joke isn’t thaaaat funny, lol.

April 20, 2009 at 10:36 AM

Just an FYI, Ted is totally aware that Barney is in love with Robin, at the end of the episode where Ted and Robin are sleeping together as just friends Ted smiles and nods at Barney and comments on how someone always gets hurts when friends sleep together.

April 21, 2009 at 5:46 PM

I still can’t get the meaning of the joke :((
This is the worst part of being addicted to a tv show that is not in your language I guess..you always miss some details..:(

April 21, 2009 at 9:01 PM

I still find the joke is abstract ………….

please do explain it in a clear sense

April 22, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Hi, about that joke, for the Spanish talkers who could n´t understand barney´s joke, here it is:

what´s the difference between peanut butter and jam?

cuál es la diferencia entre “peanut butter” y “mermelada”?

… you can’t peanut butter your dick up someone’s ass.

lol to translate it!

April 24, 2009 at 12:53 AM

The punchline is much better (and more personal) as, “you can’t peanut butter my dick down your throat”…

April 25, 2009 at 4:57 PM

you also notice that barney is getting annoyed at Ted for rehiring PJ, cos PJ and Robin are sleeping together.. So asides from the friends with benefits Ted does know bout Barney liking Robin :-)

May 5, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Yes Ted does know that Barney loves Robin by this time it is basically shown without him actually saying I know in the episode where Barney smashes a bunch of Television sets after being told Robin and Ted were having sex again the only person out of the group who doesn’t know the Barney loves Robin is .. Robin herself.

May 8, 2009 at 8:57 PM

I heard the joke’s answer was:

I can’t peanut butter up your ass.

Explanation to save time: (…But you can jam it up…) peanut butter —> pee NUT butter…Ha ha

I don’t know. That’s how I heard it before…Both have humour to it.

May 12, 2009 at 7:59 PM

I agree with the worst pregnancy cover-ups ever…and I so called they were both pregnant, but you were wrong about one thing: Ted DOES know that Barney loves robin. in the episode where Ted and Robin sleep together to resolve their conflicts as roommates, Ted figures out that Barney loves Robin (remember, he asks him and Barney denies it?) And in the end when Robin tells Barney she and Ted stopped sleeping together because Ted said someone was going to get hurt, Ted meant Barney, although Robin didn’t know that.

May 14, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Awesome episode. Even funnier joke, guy at work told us the punch line and we all laughed for days.
