Eric Cartman is The Coon! Mysterion is … every other kid in South Park!

The Coon

Every kid at one time or another has thought about becoming a superhero, and Batman was the key. Most of the other superheroes — Superman, Green Lantern, Flash — had unobtainable super powers. Batman? He was just a regular guy with ninja-like skills, a cool car and a belt full of gadgety awesomeness. If Bruce Wayne could do it, why couldn’t we, goddammit?! Oh yeah … there’s that whole growing up and having millions of dollars thing. And being fictional.

At first I thought this was supposed to be a Watchmen parody, with the fade off the pavement up to Cartma… I mean, The Coon’s silhouette. From the music alone I could see this was going to be a Dark Knight spoof. Then it was times two. And then everyone wound up in a shell of a building that looked like it came out of Spiderman 3.

I love the fact that the kids in South Park are really only identifiable by their hair and clothes, though everyone in South Park immediately recognizes Mysterion’s face when it’s revealed. All we know is that it’s someone Cartman listed when he was throwing around guesses. My guess? It was Stan — hasn’t he said before that he thinks Kyle is the smartest kid in class?

A few other great moments:

  • The top suspects for who The Coon is: Cartman, Harvey Fierstein and Bruce Vilanch.
  • The fire escape next to the police station window, explaining how the kids suddenly appeared at the window.
  • Catman’s Coonmobile.
  • Cartman: “I’m just mad because you shouldn’t use the term ‘fag’, Kyle. That’s a hate word, and it’s insensitive to butt pirates.”

Out of the people he listed I thought it sounded more like Clyde, but even more so I thought he sounded like Craig, but I don’t think Cartmen ever listed Craig as a suspect…

Perhaps this student won’t be on Southpark anymore???

I hope we somehow find out who it was in a future episode, but I doubt it.

I thought the shell of a building was out of TDK as well, the scene where the Joker is caught when the plot about the two ferries develops. Batman located him via that voice recognition device that Lucius Fox destroyed later on.

To be honest I got a little bit bored halfway through but that’s what you get after last week’s episode and the previous seasons – a simple parody leaves you with a lackluster feeling…

I thought the tip-off that it’s most likely Craig was
the fact that he was the most tired — almost asleep –in class while Cartman was giving his Coon report — asleep because he’s up all night being Mysterion. Who knows, who cares. I still thought is was a good episode. And if only one in three eps are good after 12 seasons, then that’s enough for me to still be a fan and continue to watch every week.

The Coon is my new favorite superhero. I agree with MXC I think it was Clyde because he was sleeping in class and we don’t really get to see much of him as a central character.

COON POWER!
