How I repaired my television marriage (or how I stopped worrying and learned to love The Office again) – Part 2

Here’s part two of five for guest clacker Julia Hass. Be sure to check out part one if you haven’t already.

My Second Concern: Making Karen Awesome
Like most fans of The Office, I am, of course, totally convinced that Jim and Pam should be together forever and get married and have lots of babies, because their babies would be criminally adorable, and I’m just thinking of the betterment of humanity here. But just because I love me some Jim and Pam doesn’t mean I wasn’t fond of Karen during her time in Scranton.

What made Karen and Jim so painful was that she honestly was a great person who, under any other circumstances, could have been happy with Jim. If it wasn’t for Pam, and Jim still being helplessly in love with her, and her with him, I think more people would have found Karen charming. I mean, the girl kicks ass at Call of Duty, shamelessly sings The Police at Phyllis’ wedding, and considers Bridget Jones’ Dairy 2: The Edge of Reason a hilariously bad Christmas gift.

This is a girl I could have fun getting coffee with, is my point. And despite the effervescent and transcendent joy I felt when Jim finally asked Pam out in “The Job,” a part of me was deeply saddened to see Karen be dumped by Jim in the middle of New York City at a fountain while he drove her only ride back to Scranton. Douche move, Halpert.

So, I was thrilled that in our newest glance of Karen we got to see her not as the angry woman scorned that we saw in “Branch Wars,” but rather as a healthy, happy woman married to Dan-the-Dermatologist/wiener. Because every girl deserves a wiener. Unless they’re more the type who prefer hamburgers, if you know what I mean.

(That’s what she said?)

Check back tomorrow for part three!

Great post(s)! I agree that it’s great to see Karen finally with a guy who loves her as much as she loves him. It always sucks when the “other woman” ends up being so nice… I think it’s a testament to how great a character Karen is that people were actually able to like her despite their instinctive “Jim and Pam must be together and have pretty, pretty babies and anyone standing in their way must DIE” reflex. And now that she’s no longer in their way, she can just be her awesome self.

Oh, and that innuendo with the hamburger made no sense. At all.

I still want Jim and Karen to get married.

I don’t actually think we have discussed my love for Karen. It’s actually less love and more relation, because really world, I am Karen Filipelli minus the messy dating-a-guy-who-is-in-love-with-someone-else thing, or the being-Italian thing, or the working-for-a-paper-company thing. It still makes me squirmy to know Jim and Karen had sex. Probably a lot. Probably a lot of good sex. It makes me squirmy, but if I don’t think about that, then okay.

Oh hey, and while I was watching last week’s episode I was thinking “She must have been dating new-hubby during “Branch Wars”, right?” Because she’s now very pregnant. And seemed to know him a bit before then? We probably won’t see her anymore considering she now is part of another show, but I want more closure to this storyline.
