Leverage’s pick-up, Kyle’s let-down, Reaper’s cast-aside

reaper-promoWe’ve gotten some interesting tidbits of programming news this week. Let’s talk a look at them and see what they mean.

First, the fabulous news that TNT has picked up Leverage for another season came our way on Monday. A whopping fifteen episodes have been ordered, which makes season two a tad bit longer than the thirteen-episode season one. I am thrilled to get to see more of my favorite new show this season; I’m not hidin’ it.

Next, we’ve got the news that Kyle XY will not be renewed by ABC Family once season three ends. That means it’s canceled, folks, and we’ve got an exclusive mild spoiler about how season three ends and what might be in store for wrapping up Kyle XY in a satisfying way to the readers.

Keith corresponded with someone very, very, very (did I say “very?”) close to Kyle XY, about the end of season three and he’s been told that it will end in a cliffhanger. So what’s a team of writers and producers to do when you find out your show’s been canceled just weeks after wrapping the season that ends in a cliffhanger? We viewers don’t want to be left hanging indefinitely!

If Keith finds out from his source that they get a go-ahead for a movie to wrap things up, or get permission to re-write the finale, we’ll let you know.

Now, on to Reaper. At first, when I read the news today that Reaper will be coming back earlier than expected, I was all “Yay!” Then I read on, and saw what was really happening. Sure, we’ll get Reaper back on March 3rd, but not in the 9:00 timeslot where they were originally slated. Nope, the CW is bumping 90210 to that time and putting in Reaper at 8:00.

Still not sure about the problem there? This is opposite American Idol, my friends. So, while CW is busy protecting the teens who live in the 90210 zip-code, apparently the ones who work at The Work Bench stand to get screwed.

This leaves us with TNT being the only network in this story that has faith in its show. I for one won’t be surprised when Sam, Sock, Ben and Andi line up next to Kyle in the fictional unemployment line.

ABC Family is also not renewing “The Middleman”, which is sadder news for me than that of “Kyle XY”. It was a short, but fun ride.

I had mixed feelings when I learned the other day that Kyle XY had been cancelled. It is a shell of its season 1 self, but it’s still high up on my DVR’s priority list.

Here’s hoping Magda Apanowicz finds more TV work soon! :)

I kind of see the Reaper situation as a possible blessing in disguise. The kind of viewer that would be attracted to a show like Reaper would probably *not* watch American Idol, so Reaper might get a slight boost from its core audience looking for an alternative to Idol. Reaper would not have gotten the kind of teen girl viewership that 90210 does whether it was against Idol or not. However, both of the CW’s successful supernatural/action series have a large male viewership, and if Reaper can attract that audience it might be okay. It’s too bad they can’t pair it with Supernatural or Smallville, but I understand why that is.

I like your positive attitude, Amanda, and I hope that you are right. And I even hope that’s the kind of thinking going on over at the CW, and not the “Reaper is the sacrificial lamb” mentality I was assuming.

I watch Idol and Reaper; what demographic does that put me in? ;-)

Now, I don’t see why Reaper couldn’t be paired with Supernatural, especially if Smallville is on its last season.

If you want to keep with the positive thoughts, consider that 90210 has taken a pretty big hit from American Idol, with the viewer number falling to a little over 2 million. It’s still a tough time slot for Reaper, but it does lower the bar for success somewhat. Last year, the show premiered with just over 3 million viewers. If it could manage to do that again, it would make a solid case for sticking around.

I like Reaper and AI.

Kyle XY got a little worse each season to the point where I’m not even paying attention this season while watching it.

I’m absolutely stunned at the cancellation of Kyle XY. This is a fantastic show, my favorite one and for ABC Family to end it with a cliffhanger is unforgivable! Shame on you ABC Dysfuntional Family! You’ve lost this viewer permanently!
