Hiatus is over: Praying for a Grey’s Anatomy Death Toll

greys-anatomy1Forgive me all you Katherine Heigl fans out there, but it’s time for Izzie Stevens of Grey’s Anatomy to go.

And forgive me all you readers who are sick of this topic, but I need to express these emotions; it’s cathartic. Give it a try … maybe if enough of us do it, Shonda Rhimes will listen.

Anyway, I know what you’re all thinking: beautiful doctor, lingerie model, great actress. How can you hate that? Because you see, I don’t just have a problem with Heigl’s current arc, I have a problem with her character (and with her as an actress) overall. This is just the final straw. So how about we look at things a little differently? Like blonde doesn’t mean attractive, everyone wears underwear (and strips down to it) on the show, and whiny doesn’t translate into genuine. Where’s the plus that Heigl brings to the table?

And ever since she killed (killed!) her one true love Denny Duquette (played gratingly by Jeffrey Dean Morgan; go haunt Nancy and kids on Weeds), her character has disintegrated completely. The best the writers can come up with for her is pining for a man who was on the show for half a season? Denny was a non-factor in Izzie’s life for over eighteen months (I don’t remember him being an issue during that embarrassing relationship with George), yet now she’s having sex with his ghost? They barely even knew each other!

What I’m trying to figure out is whether the writers are punishing Katherine for calling them out last year (by either driving her insane or by spiraling her off the show, or both), or if they think they’ve given her character a dramatic turn that could earn her a second Emmy (don’t even get me started on how she won the first one). Or, maybe we are all being punked….

The Grey’s writing staff has missed two opportunities to rid Seattle Grace of Dr. Stevens; first when she should have been kicked out of the program for killing (killing!) Denny, and then again just recently when Dr. Hahn (isn’t Brooke Smith suddenly everywhere?) should have reported Izzie to the AMA (or to whoever else handles naughty docs). Here’s hoping Christmas 2009 comes early and Izzie joins Denny for good. It’ll be doing us all a favor. Unless of course Heigl takes that opportunity to make more movies … maybe she’s better off where she is? Wait, now I’m conflicted!

Oh, and by the way Shonda Rhimes, my wife says thanks for bringing Kevin McKidd onboard. Maybe a higher profile for him will bring back Journeyman?

Since they also killed off Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character on “Supernatural,” the producers should just bring his ghost back as a regular on that show. At least it would make more sense!

Poor, poor Katherine. You either love her or hate her. I happen to love her as an actress. The Izzie/Dennie storyline the first time around was the best story arc Grey’s has done. They never should have killed Denny off in the first place. However, the new Izzie/Denny arc is STUPID! TPTB need to wrap this ignorant story line up ASAP. If Grey’s can’t give Heigel better storylines, I think she should move on. She has established herself as the new queen of romantic comedies. She truly doesn’t need Grey’s anymore.

I agree that I like the addition of Kevin McKidd to the cast. He’s a great actor. Anyone who can look at Sandra Oh and tell her she’s beautiful deserves an Emmy!

Ouch for Sandra Oh!

I think the Emmy should go to Ellen Pompeo for successfully hiding her accent from the world for so long:

I liked her in Knocked Up. Thats it.

Interesting, because for me, she’s the reason Knocked Up fell way short of 40 Year Old Virgin (plus no Steve Carell).

I like Katherine Heigel, but I really don’t like what’s been going on with her character this year. In fact, its a rare storyline of her’s that I’ve enjoyed on this show.

I guess its time for me to come out of the closet on something (No, not that… Calm down). I mean, its one of those things that’s considerably more socially acceptable these days than it was a year ago or more, so I think its time I let everyone know. Here goes:

I HATED Denny/Izzie the first time around. I thought they had very little on-screen chemistry, and the relationship, logically, makes no sense (and its changed little two seasons later). And the end (or you know, so we thought) of their relationship, when Denny passed away, and Alex ended up carrying Izzie out of the room, showed more chemistry between those characters in the once scene.

Now, I’ve read some of the spoilers about the cause of the Denny thing, and if they are true, I can live with it. I won’t be happy about it, but will be able to live with it.

(But, then again, I’m the guy that actually liked George and Izzie, so my opinion really doesn’t count. But, I’m NEVER against the nerdy, low self esteem guy getting the model. Just saying).

I was with you until the aside. Izzie should have turned around during her standing outside and watching the hospital arc and just gone back to the trailer park.

And the model storyline, for me, was a farther stretch than Cristina and Burke having chemistry.

Punishing her…….hell the writers are punishing us viewers.
I’ve tuned out of the show this season due to her and Denny and Grey being way too whinny.

Like Grey hasn’t been that way from day one.

January 9, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Actually, I think you are only addressing symptoms. To fix the malaise of this show, it’s apparent Shonda Rhimes is the one who needs to go. Bring in a new showrunner I say.

January 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM

I was just having this conversation with someone the other day. I never think its a good idea to replace a showrunner (specifically the original developer). While there have certainly been notable exceptions to that rule (NCIS jumps immediately to mind), in my judgment replacing a showrunner who’s voice is so deeply ingrained with the show is a mistake.

That being said, its not like if ABC were given the choice to keep Grey’s w/o Rhimes or have it off the air, that they would logically choose the former. I’m just saying that its a rare occasion that I enjoy a show that has to change its DNA so much.
