Organic gardening at The White House

I just had to share this little newsy tidbit with all of you, because it warms the cockles of my heart, hearing news stories like this, celebrating healthy food and education. The Obamas are putting in the first vegetable garden at The White House since World War II. How cool is that?

It gets cooler … the garden is organic and will have 55 varieties of veggies and berries, and a fifth-grade class from the Bancroft School in Washington DC is helping out. I love that teaching kids about healthy foods is a priority of Mrs. Obama’s, and that she gets that starting small can educate more and more people as word trickles down through families and other kids. Heck, even just setting the example of eating organic, fresh, local foods as the First Couple is a huge inspiration to the American public.

These veggies will be used for cooking the meals for The White House dinners. You know, the ones where they entertain dignitaries and world leaders. That’s huge in passive-aggressive education … I mean modeling.

So bring on more news like this: the kind of news that will feed the world, save the environment and all of mankind. Yeah, that kind of news.

Incidentally, the photo of the spectacular brussels sprouts is from the University of San Francisco’s organic garden, and the mint plant is from our very own yard, grown from a cutting from our CSA Farm.
